My biggest gripe about GT5 physics is the way the spin out so easily and it always seems completely random when it happens. It also has this strange balance where RWD cars understeer a crazy amount and AWD+RWD cars spin out spontaneously, its unpredictable and it happens so rapidly it looks to be impossible to recover in time. At times, It looks like someone has literally hit the back end out.
This for me too...

This and Halo Reach are gonna be the two games that really are gonna make trying to study the hardest. What a great fall it's gonna be. The game might have it's shortcomings, but nonetheless I find it hard to believe the game is gonna be anything short of fantastic despite any shortcomings.

Now bring on more vids of the fantasy tracks please!!!

crashes look ridiculous in all these types of games, until the car licence holders are willing to allow burnout paradise levels of destruction and crumple zones, then it's alwasy going to be bumper cars with scratches. forza was the same, PGR was the same, GT is the same. which begs the question, why even bother putting it in. the time spent adding this largely cosmetic/unrealistic damage could have been spent, i dunno, making more "premium" cars. or making cockpit views. despite being simulation racing, all "damage" does in these games is take you out of the experience imo. they need not bother untill all manufacturers are willing to see their cars go from this

to this

I'm not nearly as concerned with cosmetic damage as much as I am performance damage.
Forza doesn't have good cosmetic damage, but on realistic settings if you ram a wall hard just once you are done for.
This is what needs fixing in GT5 the most, in GT4 you didn't get punished for ramming into cars or walls and people could easily use it to their advantage. If the stupid AI that always drives the same line hit you in GT4 you would get bumper car punched off the road.

As long as GT5 has severe and somewhat realistic performance damage and punishes the player for smacking into other cars, then I will be happy. if the bumper doesn't look super realistic bending from a smack into something, I could really care less.

Thing is they can't put realistic dmg in now as they would need to rewrite the AI from scratch. All the latest vids still have the same simple AI following the racing line, one of the vids i saw on GT has the AI cars ramming into the player car several times which would put you out of the race with proper damage.

I'm still to be impressed with GT5, with every small thing it does right it does half a dozen wrong.

I'm not talking about the visual damage, i'm talking about the way the car reacts when it hits a wall. At 2:00 on that video, the collision physics are still all kinds of wrong, it looks absolutely ridiculous!

as do all other "sim" racing games. when a car can't physically bend and buckle like it would in reality, then it's going to look and react ridiculously either way. they go hand in hand, if you dont have realistic LOOKING damage (ie, burnout paradise being the closest thing), you CANT have realistic damage effects in terms of performance...PERIOD. if you slam into a wall at those speeds the car would have halved in length and wouldnt be able to move at all, anything less and it looks ridiculous.

hit a wall at that speed and the race should be over. a slight impairment to steering doesnt cut it, so imo, they shouldnt even bother with it. and yet both GT5, forza and PGR all do it, it's a waste of time.

but on the plus side, GT5 at least looks damn good when you're not hitting barriers

You completely missing my point, i'm am not talking about visual damage, i'm talking about how the car reacts after hitting the wall, the way it some how ends up doing a wheelie on its rear wheels after hitting the wall dead on at 150mph! If you still don't get it, watch these videos...

Yes its not perfect, but collision physics are a generation better than what happens in GT5.

Actually, in Forza 3, hittng the wall at that speed is game over and it better be the same for GT5 too!

It should be game over for sure if you hit a wall, but what I really hope GT5 fixes is that the AI doesn't drive that constant line despite the player position and that if/when you hit another car or the car hits you it better do considerable damage.

If they don't get the performance damage right it's gonna seriously fuck up the online racing in a bad way.

What on earth was PD thinking when they put this in the game????

With damage like that, i would honestly prefer them not to bother with it at all, seriously that really needs to go!

Well arent you in the slightest bit concerned that we are seeing stuff like this in demo form just 2 months before its release day?

As janky as it looks, it does look like PD are trying to so something interesting even if it's not realistic at all( I realize that is the point, though). That said, how viable is the "it's not done" comment on a game releasing so soon and having been in development for so long...

tbh, with a dynamic damage system it's kinda hard to judge it. sure you could end up with the weirdness of the image above.

but i think the likes of

and

look great. it's gonna be dependant on how you crash. even burnout had some funky looking deformations. but at the end of the day, i'd rather have dynamic deformation then pre-scripted bumps and scrapes.

probably not very, but it's only been a few months since our last viewing of damage and all it was was doors swinging wildly, bonets being lifted and bumpers being dragged in a pre-scripted manner. since the damage is dynamic, they could be tweeking values to make it more or less severe. we shouldnt expect a whole new method of damage. but i think we could easily see damage decals (scraps, chipped paint) being added to the mix, and maybe tone down the deformations a little?

who knows. couple of months and we'll get the answer.

GT5 damage officially a non-issue. seriously. looks damn good to me. sure you might get some funky deformations. but it looks great, and it all looks relative to where the impact happens too.
