AAaaand the real footage shows up. This is exactly what it looked like @ the store. And it's replay footage. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/top-gear-gran-tu...
Some people wonder why others are so critical of GT5. That's because we all had to endure 5 years of "GT5 looks better than real-life" and "GT5 is the best looking game of all time".
Here is a Mustang in the rain. Looks weak, but to be honest it doesn't have the shadows to make it look more dynamic. I figured there'd be more reflections on the ground or something, though... http://www.gametrailers.com/video/mustang-rain-gra...

Yea, i saw that earlier and it certainly didn't look anywhere near as awesome as the first GT rain vid we saw. Really, the game looks so flat, the AI looks non existant and im still disappointed with the UI. SOME of the cars look phenominal and in CERTAIN circumstances the game looks incredible, but there are just so many smoke and mirrors.

I've tried to stop myself commenting in this thread, but I made a promise when FM3 released that I would be just as critical to GT5 when it hit if it failed to meet expectations. Failing is an understatement though, where FM3 looks cartoony with it's lighting and the car models being used / lack of freedom to view interiors / blacked out windows at all times was hugely disappointing, GT5 manages to equal if not surpass it in pretty much every area.

Only 230 premium cars is a total failure, painted on headlights and low poly models don't cut it these days, especially when that is the vast majority of content in the game. AI which blindly follows the racing line wasn't even considered acceptable last generation, to have the exact same "AI" here is downright criminal, it shouldnt just continually shunt you, it should avoid you, it should jinx about in position. Instead it's just a procession with the player doing any of the actual "racing".
Bumper car physics are still there, for all the shouting about improvements, i see none, i see the ability to nudge opponents out of the road is still viable if not the easiest route to go.
Tracks are very bland, sprite based trees stick out like a sore thumb, flat textures as mountain ranges are very obvious (even in the damn intro video).

I just don't see 6 years of work here, I really don't. It's more akin to GT4 HD (which was what they originally announced) with a few preview cars for GT5 than an actual sequel. As with FM3, I will likely purchase a copy, but not till it's down below £20. For all the slagging FM3 got, it's funny just how below par GT5 has turned out and how reluctant the same fanboys are to realise just how many shortcomings it has.

Reviewes will be great I am sure but some people will always complain. This game has so much stuff and quality. That anything less than 9/10 cannot be taken seriously

This is how Forza looks:

Comparing GT and Forza is not valid. Because it is a no contest. However if we compare with GT5P which some say a beta version released 2yrs ago It was already superior:

That pic of the Mini Cooper is way off. I just played FM3 and looked to see if it was that bad- Nope. That picture must have been from a LOD glitch or something.

Also, I heard that the Photo mode doesn't even occur "in-game"? Like it's got the cars set up in specific environments with the High-detail models? Can someone confirm?

are you talking about forza or GT? becasue Gt doesnt have high or low detail models. forza has about 100,000 poly models for car selection/replays/photomode. in-game it's around 40,000. GT uses around 500,000 poly model cars for all modes of play, there will probably be LOD replacments when the oposition is in the distance?, but they dont outright change between modes. photomode in GT5 just adds resolution (8mp camera) and AA. and apparently ray-traced lighting, although i'm kinda dubious, but the cars remain the same.

photmode in GT can be activated during a race, but can also take place in "shoot" locations. the two images above show both scenarios. (the two sklines are from a race, the other is a purpose made photography area)

I think you're low balling that, quite a bit.

Last I heard it was 300 - 400 thousand per car, in Forza 3.

i may have lowballed the car selection poly count a bit (the numbers where from memory..but with a quick search)

LOD0: 172753 polys (car selection)
LOD1: 45074 polys (gameplay)
LOD2: 21802 polys
LOD3: 13134 polys
LOD4: 6360 polys
LOD5: 2556 polys
Hi-res cockpit: 79,845 polys

those where ripped from the forza 3 disc by modders (apparently you can rip the meshes from the game and use them in Pc games)

I have no idea where you get you info from but its plain wrong... Are you really trying to tell me that this (replay mode)....

... has pretty much the same poly count as this (photomode)....

Theres absolutely no way that the only thing added is AA and resolution.

Both games use the same LOD technique (which is fine), so if you wanna continue to be fooled by PR hype then i'm happy for you.

Kudos to PD though for getting the premium cockpits visible at all times.

considering they're completely different cars...no.

as i said. AA, resolution and lighting change (ray traced apparently) those things work wonders. those little jagged edges on image 1 would be gone, it'd be silky smooth ala image 2. the lighting would also be improved, and if it is indeed ray-traced lighting, then it will be improved considerably. image 2 has visible polygons. as do all the images i posted on the prvious page. the only difference is that the jaggies are non-existant. but thats what a supersamples. increased AA, high res image does. just look at halo reach. same thing.

So you genuinely cant see what's so incredibly obvious??? Pic 1, Look at the wheels, look at the flat doors, look at the poly edges all over the place and now compare that to Pic 2. Surely you cant be serious??

they're different freaking cars. how can you honestly use that as a genuine argument. you cant be serious??

bare in mind image 2 WAS an 8mp image, reduced to...not even 720p. image 1 is a native shot. take the shot at an increased res and then shrink it down, and what do you get? less noticable polys. polys that are visible even in image 2 btw (look at the wheels). then take into account different cars will be modeled to different standards. a couple thousand polys can make a big difference. if the lexus is the poster-boy car. it will recieve more attention. just like ezio recieves more attention then the important, yet NPc characters in assassins creed.

a more logical comparrison would be that same lexus in both photomode, replay and in-game. i'll wait while you go find them. but i dont need to see them. the BMW pic on this very page showing what it looked like IN-GAME is easily on-par, and comparrible to that of the lexus. better comparrions make for a more well rounded argument.

here you go, the full sized image for you to scrutinise, and hopefully see all those poly edges that magically dissapear when the resolution is made smaller

the car has visible poly edges. it does in-game, it does in replays, it does in photomode. the poly model does not change. dont want to accept that, then that's fine and dandy with me

Of course GT has lower detail models. Not having them would be a massive waste of resources. As cars get further away, the engine will switch LOD on the cars( basically tesselation). Replays and Photomodes also display higher-poly models which is one of the reasons the framerates are cut in half aside from more effects. As for the Mini Cooper, I was talking about Forza. The pic must have been taken during an LOD glitch where it didn't swap.

I hate to add to this Forza thing but, I don't see how GT5 could be using 4 times as many polygons as Forza3's photomode.
There is hardly a visible polygonal edge in that mode.

It just doesn't add up for me.

Forza car model looks like that on gameplay its true. Everyone knows it by now. LOD to your car and even more to AI cars.

Just before race start it loads highest model and shows your car then it turns off.l

Also this:

GT5 shadows are low res and sadly lots of gfx glitches due to some reason. The game is huge I imagine 6 months of testing would be required. They should have fixed it IMO. Rain which looks awesome in cockpit view but in other views the track is not wet as it should be. Having said that almost 1080P 60fps upto 16cars racing and 3D support it is amazing.

As realistic as racing game can get. If there is no HUD or other display on screen this looks like real footage:

that's another comparisson of gamplay and replay. they dont change model. i'm sure there is LOD models for distant cars, because as froz said, it'd be too wastefull on resources. but as far as the players car is concerned while playing. it doesnt change between gameplay, replay and photomode. i'm sure people will prove this true once more people with capture cards get a hold of the game so we can get a clearer look. it's just AA, lighting and resolution (and the cameras photo effects) that gets a boost

I hate trolling so I don't mean to troll, but it's interesting how everyone was going nuts over Kinect's review embargo (despite the fact thousands had already played it across the world in shops, there were regular family beta testers and the "Microsoft will never send out any Kinects or Kinect games to be reviewed EVER!!!!!!!!" claims turned out, unsurprisingly, to be a total lie) yet I haven't heard a peep about GT5's review embargo. Hmmm...
