We all knew Halo 3 was gonna sell big... but how big? Apparently, $170 million... in the US only!

That's right, it made more than that worldwide.

Microsoft's press release is included after the cut:

Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive game “Halo 3” has officially become the biggest entertainment launch in history, garnering an estimated $170 million in sales in the United States alone in the first 24 hours. The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster theatrical releases like “Spider-man 3” and novels such as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

“Halo 3” is the conclusion to the epic trilogy and picks up where “Halo 2” left off, answering questions around the fates of the beloved protagonist Master Chief and his artificial intelligence sidekick Cortana as they struggle to save humankind from destruction at the hands of the alien coalition known as the Covenant. WTF is wrong with the audio FX in this game, I can barely hear my own grenades and gunfire and lets not talk about when driving veichles :(... Anyone else experienced this. Very annoying to say the least!

its all fucked up. i have to turn down the volume during cut scenes. how many months have they been testing this game?!

I have some problems with audio here and there too.

Now, why do you have to turn down the volume during cutscenes?

Now, why do you have to turn down the volume during cutscenes?

cause it's so much louder than in the game. and like ajomafan said, you can hardly here the guns, vehicles or grenades so i turn it up while playing. i'm sure they'll get a fix out.

800k people played Beta and reviews came out before the game was out (not long before, but I think long enough to cancel your preorder?), so if the game was a stinker it wouldn't sell all that well. I think suggesting people are dumb and will buy anything because of hype is quite rude.

Ah i see. well it wasnt my intention to insult the entire H3 nation, fair enough. I just meant Halo has quite a few loyal fans out there who wouldnt care what reviews said or issues with the beta may be. Im the same with MGS and DMC. And just so you know, i never had a preorder to cancel, I wasnt really interested in H3, but hey, its still a good game, and whoever likes it more power to em.

well game came in the mail today(GF!), tried to play a bit but got a nasty headache and had to turn it off. Side effects from Organic Chem Lab today :p

will try again later tonight. Hopefully some of my old dorm buddies from UTSA will get the game today too, so we can run through some co-op.

generally, yes it is. However, I have a few friends that did just that. They also waited in line for iPhones on day 1. So yeah, nothing new coming from them! They're hype monkeys, but I still like em :p

Anybody feel there is not enough maps yet? i also preferred the blood gulch/coagulation to valhalla, it doesnt seem as wide and there is a lack of caves to either side for sneaking.

Thank you. I dont know why he got all bent out of whack. Honestly, i didnt mean to insinuate that H3 fans are dumb, but given how Halo 2 ended, id have imagined there were at least some people interested in how the trilogy would end. Oh yeah, and it just being the flagship title for the 360 would have garnered some more interest from some.

lol 170$ million and already broken the record set by spider man.....Which magazine was it that said the gaming community is nerdy and has yet to break into the mainstream? I think it was Time magazine and even funnier than that is the fact that I think they were talking about Halo 3 specifically

OH. MY. GOD.

I'm playing on Heroic. It took me 1 hour 51 minutes to complete. After every epic battle (and there was one that took me 15 or so tries) there is another. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE IS MORE?! HOW IS THIS NOT THE CLIMAX TO THE LEVEL?!

It's no secret that Halo multiplayer maps are taken from areas in the campaign so this below is not a spoiler in my opinion. I now know why Sandtrap exists....

Just finished this on campaign, Its truly phenomenal, beats 'Assault on the control room' (Snowy daytime level) from halo 1 As my best gaming experience of all time.

Really? Hmn......I don't think I have those problems. My problem is that sometimes the sound will cut out for a fraction of a second, but unless I'm not paying attention, sound fx are just about right, and I don't have to do anything during cutscenes. Now, sometime different is also how much much louder my dvd drive is while playing this game, you can hear it working extra over time. I wonder if that's normal.

I've actually had the exact opposite experience with the game. My disc drive which is normally extremely loud doesn't seem to spin very fast with this game. I don't know if it's because they cache more to the hard drive, or they just aren't streaming textures like UE3 does(which all of those games really get my dvd drive humming). I think it might the caching because it seems like it takes forever to load anything in the game, be it a campaign level or multiplayer.

Wow...awesome. So because the game would glitch whenever I would go to Resume Solo Game, I had to load up the level I was in by going to campaign. I saved, then was able to start up normally and without glitches by going to Resume Solo Game. Problem is, I just beat the game and got no achievement for doing so. Got the achievements for beating all the levels...just not the one for beating the game on heroic. Boourns.
