The commander did say "no lone wolf tactics". It could mean that Reach is squad based but I'll only believe that when it has been officially confirmed.

I caught up on some information (or speculation rather): The "lone wolf" teaming up with the group of spartans is a survivor of Pegasi. 300 spartans were involved in that fight and only 2 survived. All of them were from the SPARTAN III program. At least some (if not all) of the other spartans shown in the video are Spartan IIs.

And here is a good guess on what is happening (from a neogaf dude):
Posted by Trasher
I think the idea of his visor being all scratched up like that is pretty sweet. Maybe once we get to know him a little more it won't seem so overdone? I do think they went a bit overboard on all those grenade rounds though. Kinda looks a bit ridiculous.

By the way, I have come to a few conclusions of what we can probably expect at the start of the game, which I am assuming follows shortly after this cinematic. I went back and watched the first trailer, well more like listened, and figured a couple things out after now seeing the new trailer.

So here is what we might know:
After watching the newest trailer we have now been introduced to Noble Team. It is made up of 6 Spartans, and one of which appears to be the player's character (the Lone Wolf). Then there is the commander named Carter, Kat the female Spartan, Jorge, and two other Spartans that we don't have names for yet. At the end of the trailer the Spartans board two flying vehicles that we have never seen before. One of these vehicles is shown containing the Lone Wolf Spartan, Carter, and the sniper Spartan that we don't have a name for yet. It is probably safe to assume that the other three (Kat, Jorge, and the demolition man) are on the second aircraft. Right as both of these new birds take off we hear Kat say "Noble 2 is airborne and set for combat insertion." It is also worth it to mention that this same line is said during the E3 trailer, and kind of ties the two trailers together in a way.

This is where opinions may differ. I am starting to wonder if Noble 2 is what Kat is calling the aircraft she and the other two Spartans are on, OR the call-sign could refer to the second half of Noble Team since they are currently split up. Or the term "Noble 2" could even refer to Kat herself if she is second in command to Carter who would obviously be called "Noble 1." Either way, we know that the Spartan team is divided into these two groups.

So during the E3 trailer we know that communication is lost with what someone calls "Noble 1." Even if Noble 1 doesn't refer to the ship that Carter, Lone Wolf, and the sniper Spartan are on, we can safely assume that it at least refers to Carter or his half of Noble Team. We can then infer that Carter's aircraft ends up crashing by the lines that are said in the E3 trailer: "We're coming in hot." "We just lost our bird." It even sounds like the same voice we hear from Carter in the new trailer.

Going from all of this information I am guessing that the first mission will start after you, Carter, and the sniper Spartan crash onto the surface of Reach and are then separated from the other half of your team. From the E3 trailer we know that Carter says, "This is Sierra 2-5-9. You got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere." So obviously you survive this crash landing, and are now left on the surface of Reach to complete whatever mission it is that you are sent to do. It also sounds like only the one aircraft is shot down. So maybe the other half of the team will have to come rescue you at some point.

Anyways, this is what I have come to gather after watching both trailers again. Maybe I'm wrong and you fly straight for that Covenant ship we see in the sky at the end of the trailer. That would be a kickass mission for sure.

You didn't like the music? Now the music was the about the only thing that impressed me. It was a true departure from what we've heard before.
The music was pretty understated, and I definitely dug it as it picked up around 1:35 into the trailer.

Cause it's not Kelly (087). We didn't know any of the spartans shown until yesterday. Except for Jorge none of them seems to be from the SII program (everyone else has a number higher than 130 and he's taller than the others, too).

I think a lot of people missed the point of the first trailer: It's basically a new story ark within the whole Reach incident. Nothing to do with the book, we really don't know if it will follow the book at all.

btw: At the end of the trailer they are heading straight to a Covenant Cruiser. You can see it when that blast illuminates the sky.

Well I never thought it'd be following the book, I just based it off of "The Package" and Kelly in that looking identical down to the way they've made her hair look.

I gathered the same thing myself. It also means that these Spartans could have escaped Reach and went on further missions for ONI.

Oh how the purists are going to whine over continuity! lol! But Bungie devs made it clear a long time ago that their games would never be anchored to any of the novels. That they reserved the right to go anywhere and do anything in the Halo-verse. So we can really throw the Halo novels out if we want, they may be non-factors where Reach is concerned.

I love how they have seriously upgraded the graphics but still maintained the original Halo look and feel.

Some folks are completely out of their minds if they can't immediately tell that faces never looked that good in the Halo 3 engine, not at all.

Also, the animation isn't awkward by any means. I thought that would be one of the more obvious things that people would catch onto early on.

Yep, confirmed.

Lone Wolf is absolutely a Spartan III

That spartan in the trailer said he thought nobody survived pegasi.

Pegasi was the suicide mission that all those spartan III units were sent on when they were mere children in the Ghosts of the Onyx book. Only two Spartan IIIs out of like 300, Tom and Lucy, were suppose to have survived, whereas every other Spartan III was suppose to have been viciously slaughtered by the Covenant. It seems that this "Lone Wolf" is one of those Spartan IIIs and he survived purely on his own whereas Tom and Lucy barely made it out with their lives while working together :D

We have ourselves a true badass here people.

When Tom, Spartan-B292 crash landed on Pegasi Delta he only saw 291 dots show up on his display indicating that 9 must've died on landing or were taken out by Covenant. Lone Wolf was either among those original 9 thought to be dead and simply didn't follow procedure to keep his status completely secret, or he was one of the remaining 291.

about that leader saying he's glad to have his skillset Spartan IIIs were trained very well to use enemy weaponry so expect Lone Wolf to be able to pick up Jackal arm shields and use them in Halo Reach.

Lone Wolf is a Spartan III from Beta Company who survived the suicide mission on Pegasi Delta at the Covenant refinery. The mission he was on was Operation Torpedo.

He's most likely wearing a Semi-Powered infiltration armor or SP1 armor, which is inferior to what the Spartan II wear, which means he won't be able to sustain damage the way the chief and other Spartan IIs can.

Also, remember that leak from that 'tom morello' fellow? He spoke about cloaking of some sort? Well that SP1 armor is said to have camouflage properties in the book.

I think that cutscene is very deceiving graphics wise. First of all, Halo always looked best in dark settings. Just look at ODST for example, looks horrible in the day, and can look surprisingly good at night. The faces are obviously an upgrade, but that's not saying much is it? Do we remember how awful they looked in all past Halos? They were fine in the Xbox days, but on the 360 they just look BAD. Also, what we saw of Halo 3 in that other initial--deceiving--trailer, ended up the best looking scene in the whole game, so Bungie knows what to pick for this kind of things.

I definitely see lots of improvements, better animations, etc. But I'd rather wait until I see something else, specially gameplay.

Cheers for the recap Op.

Picking up Jackal shields is something I've always wanted to see in the past games. It would be very neat if it finally made it.

If I recall correctly Spartan-IIIs were also never meant for long term service. They were considered highly expendable, hence the lower grade armour -and the constant suicide missions-. So the fact that 'Lone Wolf' is still alive and kicking speaks volumes.
Another thing about Spartan-IIIs is that they have an insane tolerance to pain. These guys could fight whilst being practically dead.

I should have figured the lass wasn't Kelly. What with the robotic limb. Shame. I do hope we get to meet some of the Spartans from the Novels. They do deserve some limelight.

The trailer confirms what Halo: Reach's title hinted at: The game will depict some of the same events that took place in the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund. The book portrays both the siege of the titular fortress planet by the Covenant and the origins of the Spartan program, which developed dozens of super-soldiers like Halo series hero Master Chief.

While the siege of Reach was briefly shown in the E3 teaser trailer, it is confirmed in the new video spot by a radio message saying "Winter Contingency has been declared." The same line appears in Fall of Reach when the Covenant began a full assault on the planet, smashing its defenses and landing thousands of dropships on its surface.

The new Halo Reach trailer also shows multiple Spartan soldiers. According to Microsoft, the six-Spartan group is Noble Squad, the military unit which will be the focus of Halo: Reach. The game will chronicle their battles with the Covenant as they try and protect Reach's human inhabitants from their relentless onslaught.

Speaking with GameSpot, a source who has seen Halo: Reach first-hand describes it as "Gears of War with Spartans" and "very bleak and violent." The trailer hints that the game will be grimmer in tone than previous games, with all members of Noble squad bearing facial scars and one sporting an artificial arm. Another bears a Gears-like skull on the front of his helmet and wields a kukri-like curved machete, hinting at bloody bladed melee combat.

The trailer also may have offered a clue that Halo: Reach will focus on squad-based gameplay. It depicts a new Spartan joining Noble Squad, whose commander admonishes him to "leave that lone wolf stuff behind." Earlier this year, purportedly

That would be a very good thing. Give it a more grim tone. They need to do a better job of capturing the feeling from the books.

It seems to me that the perfect book to have read in prep for this game is surely Ghosts of the Onyx :)

I just pray that no tricks are being played here with regards to the game's visuals. A grittier Halo is what is needed, and the illusion was lost in a big way due to the drawbacks of the Halo 3 engine.

Spartan IIIs are supposed to overcome their enemy with superior tactics and team effort rather than technology (the concept of S-IIs). The downside is that we won't be wearing MJOLNIR armor, maybe a return for fall damage, but hopefully not a slower pace. And I already miss Cortana. :(

Thanks for the link DC. ery interesting, and hopefully true. I wonder whenever this AA technique has anything to do with the VSIR in ODST (originating from the Sniper in H3). When switched on the jaggies weren't visible.

I always felt that Halo was more fitting with a grittier, darker tone. I mean, the ODST advertising campaign showcased that game as being very bleak and grim - and that advert was frickin' awesome.

I welcome the new direction. Bring. It. On.
