The fiction stuff got a bit ridiculous in this game. I find it hard to think of a non-bullshit reason why Spartan-IIIs are on Reach, not to mention that they should be 13-15 years old.
Not true at all, if you read Ghosts of the Onyx one of the earlier groups of Spartan IIIs, the ones that actually participated in the Pegasi Delta missioni were 12 at that time. If Lone Wolf is a survivor of Operation Torpedo, he'd be between 18-20 years old as of the events of Reach.

Not entirely true RC, that isn't just the age they completed their training at, they were already on a massive suicide mission by the age of 12, Tom and Lucy were 12 when they experienced that massive slaughter on Pegasi Delta, it's also the mission that prevented Lucy from ever being able to talk ever again. Either this Lone Wolf is another strong, silent type like Master Chief, or it's actually Lucy, who lost the ability to talk on the Pegasi mission. Perhaps there isn't a third survivor, maybe it's Tom or Lucy, more likely to be Lucy if Lone Wolf doesn't talk ever or simply cannot.

Also, the book conveniently skips over the date that covers the events of Reach.

blmbox

#1 Yep, Spartan IIIs were sent on missions that would be considered suicide even for the more amazing Spartan IIs.

#2 Yep, sounds like he was apart of Operation Torpedo on Pegasi Delta. A suicide mission at a covenant refinery or shipyard where 300 spartan IIIs went in, 9 supposedly die on impact or were caught in their pods by covenant (Lone Wolf may have actually been among those 9, but never reported in because he/she wanted to do things alone) 291 including Tom and Lucy reported that they were still alive, but come the end only Tom and Lucy seemed to have survive. Lucy lost the ability to talk on the mission. She may actually be this "Lone Wolf"

#3 Yep, he's most certainly possibly a badass of some kind and no doubt definitely broke protocol to do things on his own. Tom and Lucy barely survived with their lives, and Lone Wolf managed to survive there all alone?

#4 The Spartan IIs are flat out superior to the Spartan IIIs. A lot of the Spartan IIIs would have never even made it into the Spartan II program. The Spartan III program didn't possess the same level of care that went into the Spartan II program. The requirements for even being allowed to enter the program was loosened up numerous times just so they could say that they had more Spartan IIIs. Were it not for Kurt aka Spartan 052 (a spartan II) and Chief Mendez (the man responsible for training most spartans and why they're all so amazing in the first place) it's possible that no care at all would've gone into the Spartan III program.

szaromir, keep in mind the pegasi mission took place before Reach. Why is it impossible to believe that one could have been sent to Reach? For all you know, especially if our hero never talks, it could actually be Lucy. There is a gap between the date of the events on Reach in the book. Anything could have happened during that time.

Bungie defending Reach cinematic as Real-Time.
Posted by: SatansReverence
So much for them wanting to show proper in game video.

The entire trailer was pre-rendered using the game engine just like ODST's cinematics.

Why bother I ask.
None of ODSTs cinematics were "pre-rendered," but we appreciate the unintentional compliment.
Pre-rendering CG videos consists of doing passes over a scene.

Render the lighting one pass, the textures on another pass and so on and so forth. All you need is a graphics engine.
Uh, no. "Pre-rendered" means rendered prior to display. IE, a video, not displayed in realtime. ODST's cinematics (and Reach's) are realtime.

Naturally though, we've heard this before haven't we? I still remember how badly burned we were with the first Halo 3 trailer :)

Well, I expect that they'll want to hold off showing actual gameplay for quite some time, but based on the leaks we've seen, we actually know that the greatly improved detail is surely carrying over to the weapon models as well as the Warthog. That bluish looking light inside the warthog in the trailer is also inside the warthog showcased in the 'tom morello" leaks lol.

i mean, Halo 3 did do some fairly impressive things, but the animation, rough attempts to appear cinematic, character faces and the relatively light look of the chief's model, compared to how we saw him look in the E3 06 trailer, killed things.

I mean, just go and watch any of the ODST cutscenes. All the characters seem like they got no weight to them at all. In the Reach cutscene, however, all i can say is wow. If Reach ends up losing a lot of what I like about that cutscene in the end, it will definitely suck.

Modern Warfare has taken over as my favorite console shooting experience, which was previously Halo. I say console, because I'll always enjoy Counter-Strike 1.6 more than either of them :)

I think this may be the Halo title that does for the series what Combat Evolved did for it back when it was first released.

Yes, I know our Lone Wolf should be around 19 years, but since we won't see his face (or even hear his voice) it's okay by me. However, the other ones should be 13-15 years old since they should be from the Gamma batch of Spartans-III, but they are clearly mature people.

The only possible explanation of Spartan-III's presence on Reach is that ONI was doing some digging in Forerunner structures and they didn't want army to know that and were afraid that Flood would appear, so they wanted to have their own super soldiers (ie. Spartans) to control the situation just in case. But it's a stretch IMO and anything other than that would be total BS. Well, at least I hope Bungie managed to come up with an interesting story for the Noble team, even if it'll be in direct contradiction with the Halo canon.
Uh, no. "Pre-rendered" means rendered prior to display. IE, a video, not displayed in realtime. ODST's cinematics (and Reach's) are realtime.
Again, there's no way the trailer was real-time because of incredible image quality, even PC games with AAx8 don't look that sharp (albeit very close ;P). The improvements in areas over Halo 3 such as texturing, models, lighting are incredible, I also hope they'll manage at least 720p with AAx2 and decent texture filtering. It would be a huge waste if that amazing work put into assets was hindered by poor image quality.

Also, I would love to see animated skybox both in cutscenes and some moments in gameplay - skyboxes in Halo were always beautiful, but they were static and the end of this cutscene just shows how much of an impact sky animation can make.

You're definitely right about that.

Some of these other spartans seem like very mature individuals. I can't for the life of me imagine them being Spartan IIIs as they appear too old for that, well maybe the girl can pass for younger, but even that is perhaps a stretch.

I have another theory as to who Lonewolf may be. Kurt the Spartan II was given some pretty high level access once he entered the Spartan III program, and I wonder if that other Spartan that mentioned Pegasi even knows the true details of that mission, as opposed to some version of a UNSC cover up about what really was going on there. Now back to my theory on who Lone Wolf could be, they could have very easily manipulated the records to show whatever they wanted about this supposed "Lone Wolf". What if Lone Wolf is actually Spartan-052 aka Kurt from Blue Team himself just posing as a survivor from the Pegasi mission?

Kurt had pretty much accepted himself as a Spartan III to show unity and pride in his fellow Spartan IIIs that he had helped train, but at his core he's a Spartan II through and through. I wonder if this mysterious Lone Wolf is actually Kurt? It would be extremely cool if at some point during the game his helmet came off or he took it off himself for whatever reason or some matters regarding his identity started to come into question. That would be a dead giveaway that he's probably Spartan-052 previously of Blue Team simply under the guise of a Spartan III. He must obviously know where his old team is stationed and probably wanted to help.

Anything could've happened during the events of Reach, and those events are glossed over in the Book. Who knows what Kurt could've been doing at that time.

Come on, Kurt was the director of Spartan-III program, he couldn't be risking his life on missions as he was too important. I think the Lone Wolf is somehow who survived Pegasi and got out of there on his own. Being a badass Spartan, things like that should be possible for him. Then ONI for whatever reason separated him from the rest of Spartan-IIIs just like they had separated Kurt before.

this is what bungie said on the Reach footage just after the annouce that it would be shown at the vga's
Regarding spoilers, I wouldn't worry too much. If you don't want to know what the game looks like, sounds like, what the primary characters look like or a confirmation that the Covenant are going to cause serious issues on the planet, you may want to avoid it. We'll be talking a lot more about multiplayer soon as we creep towards the Beta. For the most part, I'd expect the PR to follow the same mold as Halo 3 - initial glimpse of the bigger picture and fictional context and characters, then lots of focus on Multiplayer, then a slice of campaign, then it's on sale. We are always conscious of holding back spoilers (though in the case of leaks, we can't control it and it breaks our hearts and angers us as much as you

The opening cinematic footage being debuted at the VGAs is the opening salvo in what will amount to slowly building PR and Marketing assault leading up to release next year. Expectations are off the charts, it's a big game. It should be a wild ride between now and the.
Then tweeted this after the trailer reveal
Battery won't last much longer but FYI that info re: #Reach is going to be sparse for a while. Magazine on the horizon, approx 1 month.

Yea, that's most likely it :)

I wonder if this mysterious Spartan will survive Reach, or if he's going to die in the end?

You have no idea though how much it excites me that the Spartans actually appear to be carrying around as much weight as they are. Master Chief in previous halo titles simply looked a human just wearing a different suit of armor, which he basically is, but I never truly felt the distinction that one should get from looking at such a legendary figure within the UNSC. But these Spartans, however, they really do give off that vibe.

LOL

Actually this cinematic wasn't ready, they busted their asses making it come together to have something realtime to show as the reveal.
A tremendous amount of work went into this two and a half minute first look. Creative Director Marcus Lehto, and his Halo: Reach team knew it was gonna be a challenge to get it into fighting shape in just two months time, but they didn’t want your first look to be CG footage.
It isn't real-time. I know the Bungie tweet says it is, but they are trying to say is, "It isn't CGI, it is [from our engine]."

Sorry to break it to people but I will eat my hat if that was real-time and we get that IQ in the real-time engine. The texture fidelity and anti-aliasing are far, far away from anything any console can do. Sorry.

You say the texture detail and anti aliasing is far far away from anything any console can do, and I'll admit, it does look pretty damn unbelievable. One can say it looks too good to be true, which means it probably is, but there are games that are currently out that I own on the 360 that look that clean and have textures much more impressive than ones shown in Reach.

Star Wars Force Unleashed during real-time cutscenes is every bit as clean antialiasing wise as this Reach trailer and there are textures in that game that easily stomp some of what I've seen in this trailer. No joke, the game really really looks that good. Another game that looks as clean antialiasing wise and has textures just as unbelievable, is Batman Arkham Asylum.

That's a game that looks stunning and clean during actual gameplay and it looks even more stunning and clean during the real-time cutscenes. Don't even get me started on the epic fight with poison ivy and the incredible textures, animation and the unbelievably clean looking edges on just about everything. Then there is the scene where the bat plane gets called in :o

There are games that absolutely look this clean AA wise on consoles of this generation. Not a thing can convince me that Star Wars Force Unleashed and Batman Arkham Asylum don't have SUPER CLEAN real-time cutscenes (8xAA good)

Go check them out for yourselves. Batman and Force Unleashed have textures and AA levels that looks as good as this Reach cinematic. I've seen where it has been said that during gameplay they use 2XAA, but they look even better than that to me and when it comes to cutscenes, it looks absolutely flawless, unless they are just using pre-rendered stuff with in-game assets. That's the only possible way that I can explain Batman and Force Unleashed's cutscenes looking as incredible as they do. Maybe Reach does a similar thing?

I'm sorry Acert, but the large chunk of what is evident in that trailer can be done on current gen consoles. It's obviously a wait and see, but part of the reason I'm so excited from that trailer is because I believe a lot of that is possible on the Xbox 360.

It's not really a matter of whether it's possible on the 360, I'm already seeing games do things that impressive, especially over on the ps3 with games like Uncharted 2. It's a matter of whether Bungie can achieve it.

The Force Unleashed development team achieved a game that looks like it's using upwards of 8xAA and looks as if it's using a good deal of Anisotrophic Filtering. Batman Arkham Asylum is another game that looks truly amazing, and something I didn't expect we'd see achieved to that extent on this generation of consoles.

Hell, even Assassin's Creed 2 has many instances where the textures are way above average from what you'd expect on these machines. Assassin's Creed 2 is a game that looks unbelievably clean as well. I've probably just been cleverly tricked by the amazing tricks that these devs are using, but they achieve a very impressive and very clean look to their game.

Yep, Grift and that's why I suspect that Bungie is likely playing a bit of games here, because they've done it with Halo 2 and sure as hell did it with Halo 3. But, I think a number of devs have been quite a bit ahead of bungie on the technology curve and it's present in quite a few currently released games. So it really comes down to whether Bungie can actually achieve what this cutscene is suggesting they have.

What some of us are seeing as impossible for Bungie, some devs have already achieved in some form or another. At least that's my opinion based on what I've seen :)

I'm in the camp that believes that this cutscene is highly touched up and can't possibly be representative of what we'll play, but I just feel that games we can play now, and have been playing, already look this impressive and have as clean a look.

I dunno, I'm prepared to hand them a little faith in this instance. Bungie simply must know just how far behind the times they currently are, and how much criticism ODST came under for looking outdated. I dunno, I just feel that they're aware of what needs to be achieved on a graphical level to really maintain the series' reputation.

I know that graphics aren't everything - especially to Halo and its fans - but come on, it's a good few years into this generation of consoles. Great graphics should be a standard, really.
