Yea, we can obviously see what doesn't look so hot or may need some work, but I can also see that it looks much better than Halo 3.
The character models are a huge standout. The lighting looks better and the textures, I think, will stand up much better in motion than those in Halo 3.

The light sources look like they're making a big difference, Halo 3, even in the best of cutscenes, didn't have models as good as this.
Check the slight hint of green reflecting onto the back and back right arm of Noble Six in that picture with the dead grunts of the ground.
The models though, are one of the things that I was most excited about -- that the fantastic models would hopefully carry over well enough into actual gameplay. Another thing that we can't see very well in stills, is the massive visual improvement that simply the much improved animation system will add to the look of this game.

Oh, and I forgot about the wolfman. Looks like Halo 3 with pickups and wolfmen.
I think it looks fine, by the way, I just think that people expecting this to set the bar for the 360 in terms of visuals should actually look at those screens and get real.
Mods, stop changing my SIG! I'm going to end up banning you!
Another thing to keep in mind is that we won't be playing this game from some of the massively zoomed out views that we're looking at -- like with those covenant ships shining their lights down on the ground, we're going to be on the ground and with all of those light sources and the improvements in other areas like the shaders and gun models (as seen in leaks), it's going to look more impressive than what some may be thinking by looking at these screens.
Only time will tell though, I guess.
But for now, I'm thinking of what Halo 3 did well and the times in which I thought the game looked pretty damn great. This game seems to be bettering Halo 3 in a number of ways with the seemingly much improved lighting, improved AA (I know these screens are doctored in the aa department but Reach is assured to be better), much superior character and gun models (seen the leaks) and motion captured animations, with more enemies and vehicles capable of being on screen at once than in Halo 3. I can't see how something that may look like this or better come release, and does all it's expected to do with regards to scale and enemies, doesn't turn out to be a benchmark title of some kind on the 360.
But again, time will tell :)
I'd love a video, but I know we'll never get any of that crap until like E3.
Cool, check out the armor customization!

It looks EXACTLY like one of them in the facial area.

The jaggies in that game were some of the absolute worst this gen for me. Bungie seems to be especially focused on preventing that with Reach this time.
They haven't, however, guaranteed 720p, but it would sure be nice.
It ultimately doesn't matter what the heck the resolution is as long as the game looks fantastic. The Modern Warfare titles, I believe, run at even lower resolutions than Halo 3 with twice the framerate, and I find both those games to be better in the visual department than Halo 3 was, even though Halo 3 had its moments.

These days, for me, the game has to be somehow meaningfully hindered on the consoles for me to bother playing it on the PC instead. For some, meaningfully hindered is all about the graphics and for others it's about the superiority of a keyboard and mouse over a controller. It would surely also help quite a bit if I had any interest whatsoever in playing some of the newer pc shooters online. I bought both modern warfare games 100% purely for SP and have yet to this day actually tried multi on either.
Then there is always the major added bonus of being able to play the console games on my HDTV. Sure, I can make that happen with my pc by hooking it to my HDTV, but I don't want to bother with the effort of doing that, as simple as it may be. There has always been something that fascinated me about how satisfied and content console gamers could be, despite the fact the pc version of any game was usually always superior, besides the ones that downright sucked without a controller. I was a hardcore pc gamer before the 360 and ps3, but with these two consoles out, I no longer feel the need to be :)
I look at a lot of the spec requirements for a lot of these newer pc games that are also up and running solidly on the 360 and ps3 and pretty much feel content with my decision.

I almost got pretty serious on battlefield 2, but didn't end up sticking with it.
What current online pc shooters would you recommend, besides CS Source (I hate that thing with a passion lol)
I assume COD MW2 is an obvious must play?
I'll say one thing, Battlefield Bad Company 2 has me more excited than I've been in a long time about playing a new pc shooter online. Hell, I'm tempted to play it on xbox live if that video i saw "panama canal" was truly 360 gameplay and not bs.

Thing is though, I'm pretty happy with this. I had nightmares of bloodthirsty 15 year olds grittyness and COD style makeovers, but this is clearly firmly still giving off a big Halo vibe. I think the Jackals are looking rediculously deliberately "menacing", but character models were bound to improve for reach = extra detail, and you'll never really see them that close up anyway.
I just hope the majority of work is done to optimise the engine. Halo 3 is kinda wonky. It was especially noticable when going from Resistance 2 and MW2 back into 3 now that I started playing that some in multi. It's just kinda wobbly, framerate wise, at all times.

I didn't really realise the framerate thing until I returned to it recently though.

I like forgot that game existed or something lol.
I guess one of my bigger concerns with shooters, other than cs, are the maps and how big a role actual skill plays in the game. You got any favorite maps in COD? Any really good custom maps or is it still the default ones thus far? It's sorta off topic, but hey we got nothing to talk about unless Edge finally decides to reward their subscribers by, you know, actually mailing the damn thing out to subscribers or Gameinformer actually decides to do a damn update about Halo Reach for once.
I think Gameinformer's Reach update for today is going to be on expectations before the release of Halo Combat Evolved and taking us back on what the feelings of the development team were :P
This week's bungie weekly update may, hopefully, include a sp gameplay video, yep an sp gameplay video I can dream :P
I tend to agree on the Halo 3 framerate issue. I touched on it a few days ago and good god it just felt so rough lol.
I look at this screen and just try to imagine it in first person, and we could really have a looker on our hands here, but just how much of one we won't know just yet.
With Halo Reach, I think it'll come down to the atmospherics. It may not be groundbreaking or anything special in the environmental texture department, but with some great atmospheric effects and some key imporovements in specific areas, this could be one incredible looking game during first person gameplay.

** Yes We CAN!! **
The video gives off details on what the beta will offer to players including some single player campaign levels as well as some multi player modes. As one tip shows, a new feature is called "Murder Mode" which apparently allows you to kill an enemy in stealth without being detected. Check out the video below:

I think the screens look more than acceptable. They are a decent improvement over Halo 3. Expecting generation defining graphics when we're talking about an engine that will be rendering up to 40 different enemies at peak, likely each with extensive AI is daft.

If the beta has any single player content, I'll be staggered. It's more likely the footage is from an internal build sent round Microsoft for testing (its where these leaks come from most of the time). There is the slim possibility they would want to beta test co-op and/or firefight/new MP modes but I doubt it.
