We recently cut our first Alpha Release Candidate. The huge amount of work that the team put into this build has resulted in an RC that fixes the overwhelming majority of game breaking issues. Issues like crashes, networking bugs, and glaring graphical glitches have been identified, targeted, and resolved. That means significant parts of Halo: Reach’s multiplayer are now that much closer to our extremely high “shippable” quality bar.
Now that we have an RC build cut, we’ll spend some time running it through an intensive test cycle, fixing any other Pri 1 issues that come up and generating additional RCs as needed before we release the Alpha for certification. To put this in a little bit of perspective, less than a month ago there were over a thousand bugs flagged as “fix-by Alpha.” We’ve burned through those in a gargantuan “bug smash” effort to make sure we ship the Reach Alpha in the most polished and stable state possible.
Milestones like Alpha have a huge galvanizing effect across the entire team. Art, Animation, Engineering and Design have all made enormous strides as we prepare to let the outside world get their hands on the game for the first time. Some genuinely new, crazy, and fun multiplayer stuff has come together to make this a really great milestone. The Alpha testers are in for some surprises.
In a few weeks we’ll release the Alpha to a small population. It’s a great opportunity for us to iron out the wrinkles with a smaller scale audience (thousands as opposed to millions). Using their feedback, we’ll build a better Beta. Which we’ll share with you on May 3rd!

In co-op each player will use their own version of Noble Six. Doesn't sound as if we can expect to get too much background on Noble Six, perhaps only small hints. The majority of the focus will be on the Spartan characters around us.

I knew my hopes for potential space combat with the Chief wasn't quite as far fetched as I thought it was. Hey, and even if it won't involve the Chief, judging by Marcus' reaction to that question, I'd say we're going to see ourselves some space action :D

Combined with the statements of all the major story related surprises that are in store for Reach's campaign (from other sources, not this GTTV ep), I just have a good feeling about the chances :)
Oh, and the main character better not be total mute throughout the entire game, like I hear was the case in ODST. This being a team of Spartans makes it even more vitally important that they communicate with one another.

The scene: Chris Opdahl’s workstation (he’s the svelte gentleman that showed off the big AI battles in our most recent and totally awesome ViDoc). He's already in the midst of a conversation with Max about what’s happening onscreen when I walk up behind them, stalker style. For some reason, the engine is spitting out a tinny rendition of Flight of the Bumblebee to accompany the visuals. Max and Chris are talking numbers.
“How many are there running onscreen right now?”
“Two hundred, plus.”
“Oh, I was thinking we could do double that.”
And here I am off to the side speechless, drooling like Homer Simpson dreaming about pink, glazed donuts. Then they called security and I had to slink away ashamed.
Still, all things considered I’d say it’s a damn good week to work at Bungie.
Oh and, as expected, Reach's Campaign will now be under super tight wraps from now on.

Maybe the 200+ thing they were referring to has something to do with a major debris field of some kind, either up in Space near Reach where the massive space battle is taking place, or the player is down on the ground and debris is coming down onto the planet as a result of the same battle taking place in space.
