Another thing to keep in mind for future Halo MP footage, or more specifically more advanced in development Halo MP or Halo Reach footage, is that some Ambient Occlusioin Bungie has been touting, as stated in weekly updaet, didn't make it into the multiplayer beta, but should be there for retail, and I expect to be in the SP.
yep Bungie are continuing to add effects and polishing to each build, it WILL look better.

Yet the reach devs have stated and continue to state the layers of technical polish continues to get added to the game, that wont make the MP beta as Ops pointed out, so in Reach case im pretty sure MP and SP will look even better come launch.
I never stated otherwise. You're being way to defending over this. Scaling back your expectations will do no harm and we won't get pages filling up this place with arguments about the graphics.

Just be more realistic. Look how much Halo 3 improved over the Beta (it was degraded). Read the previews. Apparently there is still no AA and it's still sub HD (at least the footage from the first Vidoc was). If it turns out better it'll be a pleasant surprise, if it doesn't, well who cares?

I'm not overly defending anything, you stated
You set yourself up for disappointment if you think SP will look better
And i'm saying it will look better, thats it.

Actually Halo 3 Retail looked quite a bit better than Halo 3 Beta, there are lots of examples in the link below. Look at the Spartans, vehicles, weapons, Trees, shadowing, scenery and especially the water. The differences are not substantial but it all adds up to improve the overall picture.

http://rework3d.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=867375

And I have to agree with DC/OP on this, SP in Halo games always looks more impressive than the MP. Much bigger scale, more effects, more foliage, more sprites (In Halo 3) and always seems to have that extra attention to detail.

I'm sorry but I have to chuckle a little at the $150 Legendary Edition (that will be quickly marked down to $60 in a few months just like Halo 3).

Hmm, aside from the texture seam fixes, I think I like how the beta looked better for the most part, but I think that's a design decision. The beta looked a little more desaturated(slightly) and the lighting was a little different. The Spartans armor detail was easier to see as the specularity glossiness was lower. The water was definitely better in the finished version though, and the trees leaves were better. Still, I like the contrast better in the beta version...

That's the page I got my comparisons from. And no, apart from the water and a bit of foliage here and there, a lot turned worse. Especially the spartan models had a lot more detail in the Beta, you could see scratches everywhere and the lighting made them look very plastic - you could almost touch them. The textures received some serious downgrade, too. Everything else was art directional changes, in some cases I don't even see an improvement.

But geeze, this is what I didn't want to start. It's Halo 3 graphics discussion all over again. We'll see how it turns out. I know I won't be the one defending the Reach graphics of the SP.

I see a few things I like from the recent footage.

#1 Damn it looks fast.

#2 It's a noticeable leap from Halo 3.

#3 Good god at the awesome death animations, thank god they didn't just recycle the flailing arms death animation we've become so use to.

#4 The weapons, once dropped, blend so fantastically into the environments, actually bounce realistically when they fall, may even appear to be casting shadows, and even get tossed around during explosions. Weapons may have gotten tossed around during explosions in previous Halo titles, but I can't remember at the moment.

#5 Particle effects this insane in MP, what will we be getting in SP :D

#2- I can see a pretty big leap too. Especially in the shader/texture department. The Poly allocation is definitely better too( not to mention higher).

#4- they did fly, just not as well

#5- I am really liking the explosions- the falling debris is friggin' delicious!...

Pretty much all of it was art direction changes and most of it is down to personal preference. But like i said, there was nothing substantial but the water and foliage are technical changes that were improved which is why i came to my conclusion. But anyway, that's your opinion and i respect that.

Even at the height of Halo 3 beta discussion, especially once we got to see actual gameplay videos, very few were as impressed with the game visually as is now the case with the Reach Beta.

I was intially very blown away by the SP, however, but that turned out to be more misleading than I thought with the off screen footage that made the game look far better than it actually was, especially in the aliasing department. Whatever the case, game looks great.

The game had plenty of defenders and apologists. I see echos of past discussions (and hype) all over this thread.

I'm excited too, mind you, but mostly about getting to play the best part of the game on May 3rd.

Well, every game has its defenders and apologists, comes with the territory. The more popular the game is, the more defenders and apologists it will have.

Not much of a coincidence, though, the more popular a given game is, the more hate it will get as well. Not suggesting anyone here in particular is hating, of course, but it does go both ways.

This process is the same as it has always been. New game in a given franchise with a serious following is on the way, hype, excitement and anticipation ensues. This exact same process will play itself out again when the next major Halo game is announced.

I would rather have both. For me there is NO sub for open Custom Lobbies. That said, match making on the *ranked* side is substantially valuable and cannot be displaced by dedicated rooms/servers as they do different things.

I don't know, since communities generally form around dedicated servers, you can usually find places where skilled players tend to meet, in addition to "noob friendly" servers. It sorta displaces the need for match making in most games. At least I haven't ever felt the need for match-made TF2 servers for example, or ranks, for that matter. Ranking only really has a place in match making, when it comes right down to it. Outside of that environment, it's just a (pointless) status symbol. But hey, people are attracted to relatively pointless things in multiplayer games, so more power to them.

I don't agree at all. And I wouldn't expect a good gamer to even notice/care.

Show me where all these "dedicated" servers are that host games exclusively for the bottom 10%, 10-20%, 20-30%, 30-40%, etc for skill range?

I have never seen that happen in all my PC multiplaying years (which is over a decade).

I don't like exclusive match making, and loath the lack of a custom gamer browser, but match making based on skill is an option that is not duplicated by the "dumb" dedicated server model. Dumb Dedicated servers requires the user, by trial and error, to try to find games that may, or may not, give a level playing field.

I don't see how dedicated servers even begin to address the issue of matching players of equal skill on a regular basis.
