GDC ME2 INFO:
That didn't always happen. If the level was actually playable at the end of this process--and sometimes it wasn't--it often ran into problems like a significant drop in performance (and the company wasn't proud of the frame rate drops in the original game). The team tried to address these issues where they popped up, but since doing so required reworking "entire swaths of content," time and resource constraints meant the designers often had to live with the deficiencies.

In extreme cases, large pieces of content were removed completely. Caleston, a story-related "outland" planet with refineries and industrial cartels that was intended to be a part of the game's core story arc, was deleted from the game outright. We will never get that planet back, people. Shed a tear.

In Mass Effect 2, BioWare is using a linear, phased approach to level design that builds the levels step by step, starting with only the most important parts. This method has a couple of primary requirements: from the very outset, always keep your levels playable, and always keep them at target performance. The designers should only do the minimum of necessary work to answer the important questions about each level, most of which amount to "Can you still see how this will be fun when it's finished?"

Well, this looks pretty cool and all. Each design team starts with the simple narrative overview, then immediately moves to a barebones playable version of that framework with boxy geometry, no texture maps, placeholder set pieces, and fake dialogue. Each successive phase layers in more and more polish, such as final voiceover and surface effects.

The BioWare rep giving the talk commented that he wished he could show footage from a finished section of the game, but the team hasn't reached the final phase of polish on any levels yet.

During the presentation BioWare showed a brief production video from Mass Effect 2, which I would be remiss in failing to describe to you. There was a cutscene which took place inside a flying car traveling in the airborne traffic lanes of the Citadel. The conversation here involved an Asari character named Seryna--whose speech was just a little less formal than Liara's was in the first game--and an unnamed male Spectre wearing the trademark N7 armor. Granted, you could make your character look however you wanted in the original game, but this character looked nothing like the male Shepard with the shaved head from the first game. So maybe he really is dead? I don't know what to believe anymore.

So there's your nugget of new information. There's an Asari named Seryna in Mass Effect 2--or BioWare put a little bait-and-switch in that demo video to make people like me look awfully foolish. Let's look forward to finding out which it is!

Perhaps most importantly, the company mentioned at the end of the talk that this new design process will allow the team to identify problem areas and poor performance earlier on in development, allowing them to smooth out rough frame rates and, yes, speed up those horrendously slow space elevators.

Pumped even more now, same style, same sort of music. Just hope its a little grander than the first game, I wan't big cities with multiple shops, the citadel was the only thing that came remotely close and even it was somehwat restrictive and a bit lifeless.

The city cutscene gives me hope though, seems quite busy, at least in the sky.

That does not suprise me at all.

Anyway the internet is a flood with new rumors after these vids, and after watching it a number of times, here are some thoughts.

So Casey said that "The teaser's little "SHEPARD IS DEAD" will have a tie-in with the storyline." this makes me think its a coverstory, that along with "getting to play from other charcters prospective" makes me think that maybe at the beginning of the game you will hear of Sheps demise and go looking into it?

So Information for the downloadable content will be revealed soon, i'm thinking E3 and casey also mentioned about content to tie into the ME2 game?.

They wish to add more numerous romances and it'll be as "complicated" as the ones from the first game.

We can expect the Illusive Man from Ascension to tie in with the storyline.
there is a concept shot of man with his hands behind his back. This may be the Illusive Man?, we know from Ascension, not to mention he gives off that feeling.

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/Muhkuh_bu...

Is this Shep and Wrex? Having a smirk on your face and saying "Good to see you too Wrex" when a Krogan is lifting you up like that doesn't sound like the reaction of a new character.

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/Muhkuh_bu...

The interaction going on appears to be like that between old acquaintances (with Wrex being caught by surprise... which would explain why he's lifting up the character). add pic

Could this be the new Mako?

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/Muhkuh_bu...

A new squad character?

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/Muhkuh_bu...

What the hell is this? Geth alliance? power armor?

http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo244/Muhkuh_bu...

If you check out 16:05secs you see two Krogans walking up to a Structure, Reaper maybe? any it looks amazing and polished even of screen.

And at 18:30secs you also see a polished section of the fling cars going throught the city, just took my breath away!!!

When you play your save imported file, the introduction cutscene will change from profile to profile?.

It was mentioned that we will find out if we play Shepard or not at E3, let the speculations fly!

The story will further explore humanity's role in the galaxy, and also explore the Reapers even further.

Reading Mass Effect Ascension book now
AWESOME! A lot of info about ME universe and Cerberus. That logo on 1st video was on Cerberus screen. I think in ME2 Shepard go under cover to know about it and Cerberus will be the main enemy in ME2 and replace Saren and Geth.
And that Illusive Man will be in ME2.

Looks to me as though you're actually playing as Kaiden. When the game's project director said that you'll be playing the game from different perspectives, does he mean that you can switch between party members a la Dragon Age?

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Nah, the player is just in cover and peeking out to the right. Looks like the "Kaiden" NPC is just in the way (as usual)

Q1 is the new Q4. Finally publishers realize that releasing all their games at once is suicide. Games that would otherwise have a fighting chance are mulled over and put on bargain bin lists. EA definitely realizes this. While Mass Effect is definitely a game that would thrive in any release window, it still beats the horror of release scheduling Mass Effect 1 had. Remember the ads that appeared eight months before the game appeared? Oh the torture - people thought it was coming out soon.
