V-sync isn't used because it causes massve ammounts of framedrops if the hardware can't keep the fps above 60 fps at all times.. It's a hardware limitation, they either go for best graphics, or lower it a bit and add v-sync..
a lot of great looking games have it now tho....so thats clearly not the case. more a case of devs not being willing to put the extra time in to optimise the engine.

saints row gives the option, but at the cose of framerate. bioshock has it as default and looks way better for it with no framerate drops. its just a matter of how lazy the developeprs are whether its there or not.

well, if it causes massive framedrops that is the dev's fault.
It shouldn't risk more than a frame or two due to it's computation.

I always turn it on if given the option as tearing is the god-aweful looking.
I flipping hate it; very distracting.

Thanks for the explanations. Can anyone point me to a specific screen-shot with screen tearing?

Haven't noticed it at all in RE5, but it's apparent in every Ubisoft game I've played as well as Battlefield Bad Company.

Ahhhh...k, I see I see. Yeah, I really don't tend to notice that really at all when I'm playing, and I'd certainly deal with it over a potential slow-down in frame rate.

But like I said, since I don't notice it, it's easy for me to say this.

Ok, finally got a chance to sit down properly with the demo. Very nice graphics (nothing mind blowing), RE4 controls which are fine by me. the Co-op thing is done very well but here is the thing: This is is NO LONGER resident evil which is nothing new as I did express this sentiment countless times before but it's just SAD to see that. The game seems to be moving totally away from survival horror into Action.

I will definately get this on release but I will be looking elsewhere for my survival horror game.

Dead Space plays just like it and I thought it was survival horror

If you play it on the hardest settings it is definitely survival horror. Let's see how fearless you are with low ammo/health, knowing someone could easily take you out with one hack/hit

that would be tension tho, surely? not horror. most games have times when you're low on health and ammo desperate to reach the next check point and could die at any given moment...but i wouldnt call those survival horror!

i wouldnt class dead space as survival horror either tbh. but it certainly did the whole "action horror" thing better then resi 5 did

alimo, if you want a really good RECENT survival horror play SIREN on ps3. its pretty much the freakiest thing out there atm. hell, it's pretty much the ONLY true survival horror game out there atm.

They're zombies/diseased infected people, and I'm sure there are gruesome deformed people ala The Hills Have Eyes.
Seems like horror to me
Also having to play a game like that seems like survival to me

I would classify the current Resident Evil's as being similar to the old Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead movies, which are very much horror films.

Well partly, as the bad controls did provide a sense of false tension, but its many things the opening of doors and not knowing what was behind them, the camera angels, the fact you were stuck in small areas with nowhere to run, the music.

I'm not sure it matters though, whatever it was that made RE games the way they were has been pretty much lost and now there is a hole where that genre used to be.

Project Zero, Siren and Silent Hill kinda fill that void, but RE was always more about low ammo and things jumping out at you and that's not really represented anymore.

Although I thought RE was fussy feelings scary rather than breaking things inside your mind horrifying which is how I find the aforementioned three.

Well Silent Hill isn't what it once was either, Siren is a good example though but I didn't enjoy it that much, the whole experience was missing something.

i personally think survival horror titles need to make you feel quite weak personally...puzzles and a stronger focus on atmosphere then action is also something i feel needs to be present in some form. the moment there is a strong focus on weaponry then you lose a lot of the "horror" in a game.

siren, silent hill, project zero (fatal frame) all have very 'normal', weak player characters with majority of the weaponry being basic, handheld weapons you'd find in everyday life (except project zero which has a camera) they're all claustrophobic, they all make you feel very alone and they ooze atmosphere.

but no matter what you're definition of the genre is, it's pretty obvious resident evil shares more in common with the action genre, then it does the survival horror genre. which is a shame imo. all i ask tho, is that if that IS the direction they wish to go (which i think we can all agree, it is), take the full step and do it, dont keep elements that make the game feel cumbersome.

Certainly don't agree that RE shares more with the action genre than with survival horror...all the basic elements are still there. You have to think twice before wasting ammo, health packs seem pretty scarce and you have to survive an onslaught of zombies. The only thing gone, or toned down, is the emblem switching and cranking of stuff. The main difference i see with the old games is pacing and aiming. Now it's more about being stressed out by the ganados, rather than having dogs jump through the window.

I am having problems enjoying the control scheme... I know people insist on calling it typically Resident Evil...
Well I call it typically outdated...

I understand they want to mimic the "ohh shit I'm panicking and I've got no way to go and there are a shitload of zombies coming at me" but why does this also have to include a control scheme that makes me feel like my character has the agility of a rusty C3PO.

Where is the;
strafing?
walking while shooting?
a higher speed while turning?

Come on I mean the game looks great and I can still enjoy it but these controls are really killing the fun for me....

Ok played it, meh.

I think I agree with USB, I mean FireWire. The controls feel extremely outdated. I enjoyed RE4 as much as everyone, but what I felt was "OK" back then in terms of control, is now bordering on unplayable.

When fighting that last guy I felt so..........helpless, I felt like I was trying to park a limo in a spot labeled "compact". I think they made a handful of bad design decisions here. Not being able to move and shoot at the same time feels horrible in todays' world, specially with the machete on hand, feels so freaking useless.

The worst decisions they took is something I doubt anyone can defend, and in this regard they actually went backwards. Whose idea was it to make the inventory system overlay while everything else keeps going on, that is simply retarded.

Ok here was a situation. So this dude with a huge axe is coming at me along with five others, and then the woman needs help, I turn the tank around and help her, turn the tank around and then the dude with the axe is in my face, so I again slowly turn 180 degrees and try to escape, rinse repeat. That is RE5 at its core it seems.

Aside from gameplay, I thought the graphics are pretty damn good, but definitely not the best out there. Sound was great too, and cutscenes and story gave a good impression.

I honestly didn't feel like playing the demo more than once, the controls can really get in the way for me, the demo was a letdown for me.

^^ Agree with that, the controls in this game are just damn terrible.

I still don't get why we need a run button with analogue controls, plus its impossible to run and use the right stick at the same time.

I sort of agree about the controlls, it feels like a little more freedom would make it a little more fun but overall i still think it plays pretty good. The most annoying thing for me though is that a well lined up headshot doesn't kill, wtf is up with the enemies taking such huge amounts of punishment?
