I agree with everyone saying Oblivion>>>>Fallout 3
To be clear, I liked Oblivion more, but I agree with Grift in saying that Fallout 3 is actually a better game.
the feeling of the gun movement and shooting was horrible IMO.
Using VATS helped that a lot, and in all honesty, the swordplay and spell-casting didn't have a great feel in Oblivion either.

If you're playing a Bethesda RPG in third person (more than like, 10% of the time), you're probably doing it wrong.

You need VATS if not just for ammo management. The combat in Fallout is definitely more fun than Oblivion though, and the Capital Wasteland is hardly empty, too.

What about New Vegas? How's the combat gameplay in that? or that is not Bethesda?

I haven't played it yet. I can't imagine that it's a lot different than Fallout 3 though. If you're expecting FPS action, look elsewhere. I hear it's even better than Fallout 3 though. I really need to get it.

The look and feel of the gunplay is exactly the same in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Raptor, I dont like it, seems like something from the early launch games or something.
It doesnt feel good like in Killzone, Bad Company 2, Crysis, MW series.

Fallout New Vegas is 10 times better than Fallout 3. Smaller area but it's filled with much more interesting places. New Vegas also uses the SPECIAL system better. Crashes less etc. The best Bethesda game ;)

I think Oblivion's combat is pretty good. Maybe because Morrowind's was so bad..

Firing magic bolts and watching the rag doll roll down a hill or fly across a room never got old. Same with archery. And sword play was a lot more visceral than Morrowind's.

There's plenty of room for improvement though.

Combat in Oblivion was borked beyond belief. Unblanaced and stupid. Want to use a bow? Welcome to hell!

To be honest, I really liked the combat in Oblivion as well. Incredibly simple, yes, but a lot of fun; it never once felt dull for me, and I must have put 200 hours or so into the game. I can understand why it wouldn't be your cup of tea, but I enjoyed it.

Basically though...

I am biased because I love fantasy settings alot.
This.

100 times out of 100 I will prefer a fantasy setting to just about anything else. That's why I enjoyed Oblivion more than I could ever enjoy the Fallout series, and it's why Skyrim is my most anticipated game in years. Heh, blame Tolkien.

Again if Bethesda amp up their animators for Elder Scrolls Skyrim then I am sure combat will be great, if they are talented in that department, which I hope.
For example the game Ubisoft made, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, it was in first person, but the combat was much more visceral and better animated with various attacks and even nice finishers!

Check this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnH3OT8mF8s#t=00m40... look at the animations, it actually looks fun with various moves you can do and just adds more fun to the combat.

IMO Bethesda should overhaul the combat, animations and graphics.

PS. And add sprint button to the game!

You guys need to understand that it's not a FPS, it's an RPG. Sure, making the combat look better isn't a bad thing but they need to sort out the balancing first, that is way more important than animation or sprinting. Both Oblivion and Fallout 3 has so many skills and abilities that are just utterly useless and others that are just obviously super awesome, they need to fix shit like that as the top priority. Looking nice is great and all but i don't care how awesome it looks if it doesn't play well.

It wouldn't exactly be that much extra hassle to overhaul both - especially as you have different guys from different departments handling that sorta thing. An RPG it may be, but it should still strive to be the full package and there's no reason why they can't achieve that.

Dark Messiah had great combat and I really enjoyed that game, apart from a couple of issues in design and gameplay. If Skyrim had something similar for its combat I would be more than satisfied. Another great thing DM had was a real sense of weight to its character, which is something Bethesda has never had; your character always felt like they were floating on air. Hopefully that's something which is also improved significantly - although, in fairness, not many games have handled this aspect particularly well.

They can have both, i'm just saying that they should prioritize the core game mechanics rather than polish as this seems to be where thay always fuck things up. Fallout had the same problem, lockpick, repair and small guns are jsut so bloody awesome skills to max out that anyone picking anything else is jsut tripping themselves over. They need to sort that shit out first hand is all i'm saying. The game cans till be great with flawed animation, but no amount of animation will ever make up for the core mechanics being borked.

Leaked Pre-Alpha gameplay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbgyUSIPkTA

Graphically it looks great, but the one movement swing again? meh. They better do more than just swing left and right in the full game LOL

Edit: Nevermind, its a damn Oblivion mod, a fantastic one at that, called "Oblivion Total conversion Mod".

I'd call fake on that clip. Just look at the interface, assets and characters, it's obviously all from Oblivion not to mention still running on Gamebryo.

Edit:
Ha, i got it right ;)

Kinda obvious that it was fake footage...

I'd be pretty disappointed if Skyrim was like that, even at Pre-Alpha stage!
