Sadly, I could never get into Morrowind... I tried several times, but my interest always faded after an hour or two for some reason. I tried Oblivion once, explored a bit and also dropped it.
Which is unfortunate as in theory I should adore Elder Scrolls series, hopefully Skyrim will finally grab me. So far the only one I played to completion was Redguard, but that was a spinoff.

Leaked Pre-Alpha gameplay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbgyUSIPkTA

Graphically it looks great, but the one movement swing again? meh. They better do more than just swing left and right in the full game LOL

Edit: Nevermind, its a damn Oblivion mod, a fantastic one at that, called "Oblivion Total conversion Mod".
That's a clip from Nehrim at Fate's Edge, a total conversion for Oblivion it was recently voted best singleplayer mod 2010 at moddb.com

It'll be on next Game Informer's cover... Which will be shown tomorrow! And they are also starting shipping the mag to subscribers tomorrow, so more details should be out soon as well.

Just watched some footage of Project offset again- It still looks incredible. Except that the animation was a bit weak...

One can hope, but then again it's bethesda so i think we all know what to expect. I'm thinking Oblivion with prettier graphics and made a bit more accessible what with faster leveling, no sleeping to level up etc. I doubt they'll remove the clunky and awkward leveling system, but maybe tone the grind down a bit? Also, i really do hope they remove the scaling enemies and that stuff....but again, it's bethesda so i'm not expecting it to get really good untill the mods start dropping.

For me exploration is the most important part, they absolutely nailed it in Fallout 3 and I hope they can exceed that achievement in Skyrim. I don't care too much how it plays, a bunch of interesting optional sidequests is a must though.

Oblivion with OOO and some gameplay fixes beats vanilla Fallout 3 any day in my opinion. Especially in the exploration department, you should check that out :)

I don't know, from what I played of Oblivion, it didn't have too interesting landscapes or single small locations IMO.

i agree. oblivion was larger, but far less interesting. there was often very little reason to explore, and when you did it was typically a repetative cave or tomb that looked like the other 50 you'd been in. fallout nailed the exploration tho. you really wanted to explore, not so much for the propect of a reward, but becasue it was interesting finding out about the buildings you where wondering around in, be it a toy factory, or a bot factory, or a supermarket. when you happened across a new building you wanted to explore it there and then, not carry on walking past. the same can't be said for oblivion tho. i think it helps that artisitically it was a far more diversie game too. morrowind was better then both in that aspect. but oblvion was a bit too samey everywhere you went.

if the new oblivion can improve on the shitty animations, shitty visuals, shitty voice acting and have exploration as good as fallout 3, then it's going to be awesome. but i'm honestly not sure that's possible due to the setting alone. you're limited to caves, tombs and ruins. i'm not sure how that's going to compete with fallouts iconic buildings and monuments with interesting narrative and backstory attatched to each. hell, i'm not entirely sure bathesda are capable of fixing the first 3 things either tbh.

With OOO you completely remove scaled enemies and loot in every dungeon in the entire game (except for the expansions) so all of a sudden, you really don't know what to find in a random dungeon and stuff like that. Makes exploring fun and worth while again. I don't think Cyrodiil is any more boring than the ruins of DC though, it's just a different aesthetic. Forrest and castles or burned out buildings, but both are pretty lacking in diversity :)

Oh come on, Fallout 3 had Ruined Subway, Ruined Factory, Abandoned Tunnel and Dank Cave where Oblivion had Dank Cave, Other Type of Dank Cave, Ayleid Ruins and Ruined Fortress. It's the same bloody fare with different wallpaper.

If you are talking imagination on what there might have been in the ruined factory, teh same is applicable on Oblivion. Maybe that cave over there will be a necromancers lair, or maybe that ruined fortress will house a ghostly warlock or whatever. It's still just rummaging through the same 5-6 copy-pasted locations with slightly different layouts.

Sure, the DC wasteland was smaller and as such the frequency at which you run in to stuff is higher, but saying that Fallout 3 somehow had more interesting and varied locations i think is quite a big exaggeration.

I don't know if this argument makes sense to anyone, but across Poland, Germany and France I've seen enough medieval architecture (both well preserved and in ruins) that discovering typical medieval structures in the wilderness just doesn't make a strong impression on me. Fallout is more interesting because it is a modern civilization destroyed, something I don't see in real life*. These factories, museums, shops, hotels vaults, mines etc. served as an excellent exploration setting. Repeated metro stations were lame and tedious, I'll give you that, but overall I have great memories from visiting capital wasteland. I remember Paradise Falls the most, you see the huge pink banner from afar, think it might be something happy in the sea of brown walk to that place for several minutes only it's a place of slave trade (nothing new in Fallout, but you know)... There were many other places like that, town of superheroes was my favorite. :P

*to a degree - I was a kid after communism fell here in Poland and in 1990s after many industries collapsed we had many deserted factories, which were very cool as a playground and made for an excellent grafitti training area :P Most of these buildings are used again, though

Obvious things, but if like me you are starved and want to read something elder scrolls related, they make good points. Although I quite like having magic separated into different schools.

depends really on consoles the textures (distance) were shockingly shit and the animations are well.. legendary. but the visuals were not overall shit, i found the engine run better than it did in F3..

Distance textures were absolutely fine on my 360 version, and I'm not counting animations as part of the visuals.

How is animation not part of the visuals? At any rate, i think oblivion and fallout 3 both look fine, besides there are a lot more pressing issues to deal with before worrying about minor details like that :P

Erm, because KORNdog - who I was replying to - addressed them separately, and so I did as well? I never said they weren't part of the visuals; I just said I wasn't counting them in this particular instance.

Animation/movement is probably the number one thing to me. Good animation/physics make far more difference than shaders, IMO. Well, maybe not far more, but if the animation is shit ie Fallout/Oblivion, it can really pull me out of the experience...
