I really hope Bioshock does well.. Not just in sales but also in awards (GOTY?).. Maybe that makes more gamers aware of it.. [...]
More important that the gamers it's the developers. Otherwise they will be affraid (they already are?) of being creative, go over the top, impress us, and we will end up only with the Fifa 2008 and Splinter Cell 7 and...you get the point.

Wait.. I'm not following.. do you really think that the genre has no variety? Doom 3 shares very little with quite a few of the genres recent entires. There's plenty of creativity and innovation if you know where to look. Like.. Bioshock.

Still haven't played the demo, working on getting it again.

Well, finally got to play it.. pretty superb stuff. Like someone said before--the only problem with the demo is that it ends. The setting is just fantastic. The world needs more steampunk [I realize this takes place in 1960]. It's a shame Rapture went to hell. It seems like my kind of city.

Any word on how long this game is supposed to be? After the demo I'm really considering buying it...but not sure if it would make a good rental and buy later.

Ken Levine said 12-20 hrs for the main quest, thats not counting all the side quests. Not to mention there's going to be a big moral choice involving the Little Sisters.

And from many previews I've read, the guys playing it have literally just reloaded check points dozens of times to play out different sequences different ways, because the AI never attacks the same way twice.

Just played. Didn't disappoint a bit (and heck, with all the hyped expectations, i could only have been disappointed, but hell no). Like many already said, there was soul put on this, attention to the details. The mood is indescribable, the graphics are top, but the sound!! Oh my!...
The gameplay is very cool, and now although i know this one's a winner, my only fear now is the story, i really hope that the full game manages to deliver a concise, coherent story.

Wish i could fast forward to the end of the month now. In th mean time, going to play it again now.

game looks incredible. really like the 1920's-30's art style and the story seems intresting. some very nice scripted events make this game very immersive aswell.

but the crazy enemy AI and average shooting mechanics make this one for me to miss. to many FPS's are doing the 'shooting' part so much better. eg. R6:vegas, BIA3 and COD4. They should have focused more on the RPG/puzzle aspect, then i would have been more interested.

I noticed that if you have your dashboard default difficulty set to hard, it seems to let you pick the "hard" difficulty. I haven't played the demo on normal, so I'm not sure this actually works--but it seems to.

I also really love that they do a brightness calibration from the beginning of the game. That's a feature that more 360 games could use, especially Condemned.

Average shooting mechanics be damned.. just watching the video at the end of the demo should be evidence enough that combat in this game isn't focused completely on your weapons. The plasmid combos, and more developed plasmid powers certainly look pretty interesting.

I'm a sucker for a good shooter, but the focus doesn't seem to be squarely on shooting here.. and that's a good thing. As far as campaigns go, this one seems to be shaping up to be something unmissable, if you ask me.

You're right about one thing though, the setting is unbelievable. I wish I could go there--but at a happier time before people got all "sliced up."

Me too.. I hope I can pick it up on the launch day. Really depends how busy I am between now and then. Regardless, this is the next title I'm buying for sure. I still haven't gotten around to Forza, which is a damn shame.. the backlog continues to grow.

I started my download last night around 23:30 (local time) and it probably took forever for it to download as well. No doubt the servers crashed every 30 seconds while it was downloading. But since M$ was smart enough to add a low power mode for Marketplace downloads, I just turned off my 360 and let the system handle the rest. By the time I awoke around 05:00, the download was finished and I got in some lovely quality time with what has got to be one of the best demos ever.

Word of caution. According to Major Nelson, the rate at which you gain abilities and weapons in the demo is accelerated in much the same way that they were in the Crackdown demo. That said, the demo was still top notch anyway. Essentially you are playing through the first level of the game; and not the complete first level either. All the same, it takes probably a good hour (plus) to play through the demo your first time through. I guarantee you, you will spend quite a bit of that time just gawking at the glory of the majesty of the game.

The demo starts out in a realtime cut-scene with the main character in a plane (you know the one that crashes). Then seamlessly cuts to the aftermath of the crash (ala the very first episode of Lost). I swear this to you when I say it, but when the crash aftermath scene pops up, where the main character is floating in the water following the crash of the plane, I swear as God is my witness, I thought the scene was a non-playable, CGI pre-render. I have simply never seen fire and water effects in a videogame look so damned real. It took me a few beats to realize that the scene was in realtime and was playable. At which point I spent the time swimming around the crash site and the lighthouse. Watching the tail section of the plane slowly sink below the deep, and watching the passage of the full moon across the sky complete with plenty of cloud cover. It is all simply just too beautiful for words, and I have been dying all day to get the time to come and talk about it.

I won't go into too much of the hows, whys and whats, as I do not wish to spoil the experience for anyone. Just know that everything here borders on utter perfection. After getting the "Incinerate" plasmid, I found myself snapping the fingers of my left hand at co-workers and other assholes all day long. I am sure most of them had no clue what I was on about, but it was good exercise for my inner Calvin, whom I have not played with in years.

The atmosphere in BioShock is nigh perfect. It has been a very long time since I have played anything where I seriously felt I was in the game. The use of audio and sound placement lends itself heavily to making the world of Rapture feel real. Every little sound will have you jumping out of your seat damned near. The first combat encounter was crazy, exhilarating and terrifying all at once. Same goes for the first time you go into battle using your first plasmid. And the city is just simply gorgeous. Seemingly everything about this game is just . . . done right. Rarely have I seen such tender, loving care for every little nuance, put into digital form.

If the demo is anything to go by, BioShock is the first, true "absolutely must own" title, all year. Next Tuesday cannot get here soon enough.

EDIT - One last bit, and trust me on this one. DO NOT play this demo until you can play it with all the lights out and in as close to pitch darkness as possible. And if you got 5.1 surround, turn that shit on. The audio effects in this game are going to win all sorts of awards and nominations this year, for being some of the best in the short history of videogaming. The 5.1 really just puts you right in the center of everything. And Irrational was smart enough to play a lot with audio dynamic ranges. You get a lot of that in films, but extremely rarely in games. But by nature, some things are simply louder in contrast to other things. And BioShock plays with those audio effects like a pro. The foley team for this game are going to give more than a few of Hollywood's best a real run for their money in the audio effects department.

Hour plus? I don't think so.. I was taking my time and there's no way that demo took an hour to play through the first time. The second play through, was probably about 20 minutes.

I'm man enough to say that I screamed like a little girl a few times while playing through that demo. Yes, sir. I sure did. Dad was like, you're no son of mine, then jumped too when some splicer popped out of no where :p

Still, I can't stop playing the damn demo. Ken Levine and Irrational Games(2K Boston 2K Australia) got it down once again
