GSY Video PS5

It took us long enough but here is finally our PlayStation 5 coverage of Black Myth: Wukong in all graphics modes. Sadly, none of them are satisfactory in our opinion, mainly because of unsteady frame rates and, in some of them, disappointing image quality. Obviously, with a game that demanding, it's not surprising to see compromises on a console, but we believe there should at least be an option to cap the framerate at 30 in Quality mode (provided the game is properly frame paced). A 40 Hertz mode would also be a welcome addition instead of the current Balanced mode, but something should also be done to image quality to make it more appealing. The Performance mode isn't steady enough, which again is understandable to some extent with all the game is trying to do, but we also hope there is a way to improve image quality a bit. All this is all the more frustrating as the game is very engaging, combat is satisfying and the game world is exciting. Level design is a bit of a letdown though, but this is partly due to the use of awkward invisible walls - on a side note, it's also very annoying to see an enemy can push the hero over the edge of a cliff while it's impossible for to jump to his death on purpose, letting the player believe it's a safe spot to fight. Other than that, it's really a game we'd like to explore more, with improved performance and image rendering ideally.

I think the game looks quite good though I know the digital foundry verdict. What do you mean with "disappointing image quality"? One thing is the dithering in the blur effects.

That and I'm not sure FSR was the best idea to upscale the resolution as it looks quite messy in movement. TSR would have made a better job. Balanced and Performance modes really don't look very good on a 4K display.

Sure DLSS is better than FSR but I also have the feeling that it is a bit overhyped. I think FSR looks quite good if the base resolution is not too low like 720p. FSR has a bit more shimmery on thin lines and more breakup on animations but people behave like it is PS1 graphics.

Digital Foundry tested TSR on Black Myth Wukong but said it isn't a remedy maybe due to not having the latest Unreal Engine minor version of UE5.

When I think about Star Wars Outlaws the FSR was good in quality mode but too aggressive due to very low base resolution in performance mode.

TSR is also better than FSR and it's built in UE5. Not saying it would have solved all the issues but well. Maybe that's the best they could do with IQ, but I find it a bit sad to acknowledge that today's consoles can't do better. Now after all is said and done, the priority should be to fix framerate issues, to add a 30 fps cap in Quality mode and to transform the 45 fps balanced mode into a 40 Hertz mode taking advantage of the 120 Hertz output.
