The next Action-RPG title from Square-Enix, Nier, will be released worldwide on April 24th. The game is definitely not eagerly-anticipated, but maybe this launch trailer will convince you.

Square's insane! Just because I'm not Japanese doesn't mean I prefer to play a game as an ugly, old men, instead of as a much easier on the eyes, young guy. To be honest, it's not just the guy that looks better in Nier Replicant, the whole game looks better than Nier Gestalt.

Story and gameplay-wise the two games are pretty much the same. The only difference is that the main characters look different and because one is much younger than the other he's the girl's brother and not her father. Other than that it's the exact same game, so I personally would prefer to play the version with the young guy.

Feels already discriminating !
I still dotn know how to think of this yet, need to see some solid gameplay videos.
Personally, I think they did it because they think Westerners prefer characters with a more rugged look. To be honest, judging by the look of games made in the West they're not exactly wrong.
As true as the case with your boyfriend and his brother may be we have to talk in very broad and general terms here, and i don't think that the perception of the bond between parent and child as stronger than that between siblings is wrong in both large parts of Europe and America but ofc it won't apply to everyone.
let me just underline that by saying that i think that this is a very niche game that won't really benefit from this attempt at broadening the range of potential customers. The people who are stoked about it now would be stoked about it with the original scenario intact as well.
