Team Ninja are experts at imitating the latest hottest action trends: they mimicked Virtua Fighter all those years ago, then aped Devil May Cry over 10 years ago with Ninja Gaiden and now from what I can see they're at it again with the Souls series.
I've never been a Soulsborne fan, but I am curious about Ni-Oh. If it's good I'll at least know they're next Gaiden venture is in good hands... Hopefully.
I like how fast and freely you can move and not be limited to movement and have some nice action perks like being able to time your dodge to save some stamina and pressing R1 to fast stamina recharge (though i dont notice it myself but i read on neogaf thats what happens lol).
I love the lock on feature most hate it which i dont know why.
Lock on to enemy you can move fast and freely, hold guard as a samurai would to face the enemy constantly and start strafing. As soon as you dont guard but have lock on to enemy the camera and enemy focus is there but you can retreat faster without lock on hindering you and be quick to guard to strafe again.
Its an awesome design to gives you the advtange of being personal to one enemy or quickly move around to avoid being hit without loving the movement of speed and enemy target and camera being annoying.
Though three things i hate alot is, durability is so fucked up. You barely use it and its start to break down fast.
Second one is when your stamina is low and glowing red if you attack which can happen by mistake your character stops to breath for like 1-2 seconds and cant move which is annoying.
Third one is, its insanely hard how much damage these generic enemies deal so much with 2-3 hits you are dead thats it. Its like TN went straight to Very Hard or Master Ninja mindset difficulty for this game lol
Anyways i am definitely buying it. I love the design, the speed of the movement and core combat but those issues i mentioned (so far i encountered) needs to be fixed.
It's also quite ugly imo. Framerate is shit, yet it looks like they haven't even figured out basic shaders. Welcome to 2016, where team ninja are still struggling with normal maps while UE4 supports PBR materials :P
To me the game doesnt feel jerky at all to me and i been playing i for like 3-4hrs straight. Jerky to me is when shit hits bad like Witcher games or uncharted 1-2 lol
Tbh in the beginning yeah the 2-3 hits dash is good, time it to get stamina back more quickly. But as you level up you can unlock parry in various ways in specific stance and each stance is crucial to know them inside out and against what enemy and how much each attack for each heavy attack for the stances do, so it has more depth to it than just watch stamina and spam attack and roll.
Like i been saying, its closer to Bloodborne and its alternative weapon mode than Souls games. Also you unlock new moves like attacking and jumping on the enemy and then slashing straight down, or attack and then charge fully to a spin attack.
It's pitiful that a game that looks like this has to choose between 60 FPS or 1080 though. Like really? It looks like a 360/PS3 game almost.

Though i do agree with Megido, a game with this visuals it should be 60fps 1080p.
As for the damage, you kill with like 3 hits as well if you use a spear and the high stance.
In other games if you lock on you can only strafe until you turn it off then you can move around and then the camera can be a bit annoying to change it the position to the enemy to locking on, or worse multiple enemies.
But with Nioh's lock on you can move freely and fast or strafe and stay focused on the enemy you locked on to by using guard. Release guard when you see you are in need of retreat but at the same time, the camera will still focus on the enemy until you turn off lock on.
I personally thing its a great thing they did here, it gives me quick choices to be focused on strafing or quickly retreating and running around for the stamina to recharge and try again without losing the amin enemy i am trying to focus on and constantly locking on and off.
I was quite intrigued by this when it was annouced. But the demo has put me off tbh.
I do like the idea of fighting the dead though to get loot. That's quite cool.
Oh, and the graphics are hilariously bad no matter what mode you play on. Lol.

Now one stupid design is why did they have the path i need to go to have flaming fire infront forcing me to run through and get damaged badly for a few seconds? so annoying.
Also one funny thing happened to me was i was fighitng 3 enemies and was near the edge of a high place, as they attacked i blocked but they pushed me to the very edge and my character was about to fall down but tried balance himself with one leg as if someone pushed him and then i fell down, pretty nice animation detail there.
Later on, i attacked an enemy near the edge of a roof and he did that too lol.
the undead are easy man, just take time out and practice on them, you need change stance with them high/mid for walkers, low for the crawlers - hit / dodge, rinse and repeat, i use high for black armour npc, mid for the normal mobs, and mid/low for undead, depending on if they are walking or crawling
as for the stamina thing, its fine, you just need manage the attacks on the enemy and try not to over hit, also try not rely on blocking, even in souls games there was slow down when your shield got broke, and there was time for the NPC to chesse you
also did you notice the way the enemy fall off stuff when playing, it so cool, the way they sort go go go gone over edges to there doom is too funny

And yeah i did notice that, i even mentioned it lol.
Just so you know, your character does that as well, happened to me one time, was too funny.
