Listening to the 1up podcast right now, latest episode, they talk about Alan Wake.

Their description is literally "it's Max Payne with light mechanic instead of Bullet Time". So despite having no real clue, my random speculation hit it spot on.

They go on to say that the light tagging is really satisfying, and I can somehow imagine it being just that so hey, consider me somewhat intrigued.

I remain skeptical of that description. Journalists say weird things, and it looks considerably less action oriented than Max Payne.

It really doesn't, look at the scraps of gameplay footage there is and you'll see like 8 shadow dudes coming at you and you using flashlight, flares, generator/spotlights to strip them of shadows and shoot them.

On the podcast they kinda settled on it's an Uncharted 1 for the 360 where, if Uncharted was an action adventure through an Indiana Jones lens, this is an action adventure through a Stephen King lens. They mentioned that during daytime there is some light story exposition, and during night time you'll encounter some minor puzzles, the latter fitting rather neatly into the Uncharted comparison.

No climbing in this one though obviously.

I dunno, now that I know that the action is a focus and that it's a uniquely thought out and addictive aspect of the game, I'm actually looking forward to it. It's starting to make sense in my head finally.

May Payne was a 3rd person Shooter right.. ?

I'm willing to give Alan Awake a shot because the atmosphere looks brilliant but I'm guna be pissed if it turns out to be another Uncharted (had such high hopes for that game)

I don't think we'll have to worry about that. And, yea, I was personally never really concerned that this game wouldn't be pretty rock solid in the action department. I also agree on the point that tagging the enemies with light looks like it could be most satisfying, indeed. I love the way the enemies react to that happening, and, thinking about it, there truly are a number of cool and interesting ways that Remedy could probably take advantage of the light based combat mechanic in this game.

I also wouldn't be remotely surprised to see something similar to, like in Splinter Cell Conviction, where the story at the time has direct and meaningful impact on the game's combat mechanics. Since Conviction, I've become very fascinated by the thought of other developers taking similar risks, or creative license with the established game mechanics. It shouldn't only be the story that expands or progresses forward as you get further into the game, I'd very much like for the gameplay mechanics to come along for the ride as well.

Oh, I should probably clarify. I don't believe they mean adjusting or changing current or already existing facial animations in the game, but just that any DLC content that they'll release in the future to add further value to the game, will be of noticably higher quality in the facial animations department.

I think they mean the shooting aspect grift, like jolli stated and i agree i went into uncharted expecting a tombraider 1 type of game, and what we got was Gears in the jungle.. and a plot.
yes there is shooting in tombraider (1) but its never the heart and soul of the game, the adventure is.

Tomb Raider being a shooter would be doubly awful since the combat sucks.. but Remedy knows action, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I actually think this game needs to be half-shooter for it to keep the game exciting for the general audience. I REALLY wish this was still a PC title, so lame. I bet it would look absolutely incredible runnin on my new pc :( :(

Very good point, you do need something to compliment the story experience. The player needs to feel engaged as if their actions are pushing the story forward and creating opportunities. It can't just feel like a distraction.

Damn.. icemanu, that video of that guy playing the first episode of Alan Wake, wow. Damn, damn. I literally always steer clear of creepy or potentially scary games, but I'm so buying this one. I'm breaking quite a few of my game rules with this one :D

Can't pass on the Max Payne dev's next big thing, especially when it seems to be delivering and then some :D
