You also get a fantastic feel for how well the combat controls are handled and it becomes even more obvious than its basically ever been, in my view at least, that this game is made by the same people that brought us the awesome Max Payne games. Thanks to the Giantbomb video, I also came to realize that the environments were much more explorable than anything I was initially expecting, despite the tightly scripted and linear nature of the game.
One of the biggest things for me personally as well, besides the fact that it helped give me confidence to know that I can play through this thing without being totally scared out of my mind, even though I still fully realize that I haven't even begun to see the scarier parts of this game yet, is that it also showed me what a tougher taken enemy can be like besides just simply being faster. I really like the idea of the level of darkness around them being so strong that it can't as easily be burned away as with other taken. It does a great job of leaving the impression that there will be some really interesting moments that help with regards to the pacing and variety in the game so you don't feel as if you're basically doing the same repetetive thing all game. I mean, all good games -- even ones where you are actually doing the same thing all game -- do this in some form or another and its good to see that Alan Wake does it too.
What's more, and this really can't be said enough, the sound design in this game is incredible. The sound associated with the peeling away of the darkness with your flashlight is so awesome. Then there are the environmental and weather sounds. There was that awesome loud thud and stomp sound the taken made as he ran and jumped across those logs. Simply just the sound of you moving through the environment and stepping on things like leaves is just great.

The Giantbomb vid is good for some very important reasons. It gives you a real sense of the combat and quality of the controls in this game. It also helps to really show you just what an impressive degree of polish is present in this game, and why people going nuts about the atmosphere in the game are 100%. Oh, and it also basically shows you why this game, on the Xbox 360 anyway, absolutely could not have been done at 720p. There's no way a lot of the things present in that Giantbomb video from a visual standpont could be possible at 720p without the game looking significantly less impressive.

It's clear a big design focus for Remedy in this game was to have all sorts of crazy things take place in the environment in real-time, but also to have highly advanced real-time weather affects that they could use to set the mood outside of simply just cutscenes, and they wanted to be able to combine that with truly amazing lighting effects.
They've succeeded, but they succeeded by lowering the native resolution of the game, but as a plus we also have a very clean looking game, thanks to the 4XMSAA.

Mods, stop changing my SIG! I'm going to end up banning you!
Some of the stuff in those CE/LE are usually totally worth the price of admission. They usually have really cool behind the scenes developer commentary about what the overall development process was like and what directions they thought about going in, but opted not to. They usually give you all sorts of really interesting information about not just development of the game itself, but the process of developing videogames as a whole. Whenever I've seen such things, I've always found them to be particularly interesting.
I like seeing instances where some of the best ideas were the result of complete accidents, or bugs. In even rarer cases, you actually get to see the entire process by which a developer painstakingly comes up with a solution to something they want to achieve in their game, and that's almost always really awesome. Also, that FBI files book about all the events that transpired in Bright Falls has me excited like you wouldn't believe. I can see it really serving to enhance my overall experience with the game. Also, there's a sense of pride that I get out of owning the collectors edition or limited edition of specific titles. For most I just couldn't care one way or the other, but certain titles you really do want to make that exception, in my case anyway :)

Chris Grant, who is the Editor-In-Chief of Joystiq, said it was his game of the year, that he like it better than Mass Effect 2! He also said he was amazed that the game was below a 90 on Metacritic, really expecting it to be around a 95.
Loving what I'm hearing in this podcast. They make the combat sound so amazing. They mention it being surprisingly strategic, and that's something you can immediately tell isn't bs because it all makes perfect sense based on what we've already seen.
You have all these taken coming at you, often times from various different directions, especially right on your six, naturally you're going to need to make the best possible decision as to exactly which of the taken you'll target first. But then you also have options like dropping down a flare, which won't exactly kill them, but it will at least give you some breathing room because they'll shy away from the light it produces. In addition to that, it's also effective at stripping away their shrouds of darkness. So while they're busy staying away from this flare that you've just dropped, all of a sudden you've just bought yourself some valuable time to either recharge the battery on your flashlight or pop in a new battery and focus on taking out the largest of the threats, and then dispatching the lesser enemies afterwards.
Then when you also factor in the dodge, there's generally just much more to think about than you would otherwise expect in an action title. They also state with some confidence that Alan Wake's action gameplay is something that could totally stand on its own separate from the storytelling experience, because it's just that good.

He said: "We are betting the farm on [Alan Wake] and if this isn't a success we'll be selling hotdogs in Helsinki. Really.
"We were in a good situation after Max Payne 2 and we invested everything after selling the intellectual property and putting it back into the love of making videogames."
He added: "Everything's gone into this project so this will ultimately set us up for how we continue and how many videogames we can make in the future."

With this game, however, I'm totally going in with all the excitement I had for Conviction and then some. I'm expecting this one to be a truly incredible game through and through from the start. Pretty excited about the story, but I'm also pretty surprised that I seem to be so excited about taking on as many creepy enemy encounters as possible, something that was once a negative for me, which may have prevented me from getting the game altogether.
Haha, Jolli, you've got no idea... If Blue Dragon 2 were announced, just wow, I wouldn't be able to put my excitement into words. There's so much potential for a follow-up to that game, not only on the gameplay and story side, but on the graphics engine side as well. I just hope Microsoft learns that follow-ups to games like Blue Dragon and Alan Wake are more beneficial to them in the long run than not.

The reviews have disappointed me. Don't get me wrong, an average of around 8.5/10 is not bad, but I was expecting 9.0+ to be honest.
Bioshock and GTA4, two of the hands down most intensely praised games of the last 10 years, are genuinely some of the least satisfying gaming experiences I've had. So I'll take you, Alan Wake, to be my wedded 7/10, to have and to hold along with Splinter Cell Conviction from last month.

So very often there are plenty of 8/10 games on the market that I have fun with longer and/or more fun playing than the 9/10 or 10/10 games that offer certain things that are very impressive, but in the end the overall fun value doesn't equal other "lesser" games.
I'm not going to assume Alan Wake fits this bill, but I certianly agree that the numeric value next to a review is anything close to an indication of how fun it is, rather just how well polished it is.
Darksiders didn't have a huge amount of 9/10 reviews, but I had far more fun playing that game than the majority of 9/10 games that have been coming out as of late.
