Battlefield 3 -- Now with *less* suppression!

Been playing the game a good bit over the weekend and I still just can't get into it much. It's not even close to being as fun or rewarding as BF2 was. I honestly think the map designs are part of the problem as well. Rush on most maps is sad joke.

yea this game isn't clicking with me either, the rush maps are all pretty bad and I don't like conquest anymore :/

Looking forward to visiting Wake Island though, that is one of the best FPS maps ever. Rush on Wake should be awesome.

I read that they are planning on either nerfing the stinger, or increasing the heli/jets hit points so that one hit doest = disabled vehicle. If that is the case they need to let you retain a lock on even if the vehicle has deployed flares. Flares should break the homing missile once launched, but not before launch. It's annoying when you lock on to a aircraft, you see him prematurely drop flares, only for you to then have to wait 10 seconds untill you lock on again, in which time the aircraft has reloaded flares thus repeating the cycle.. It's annoying as hell.

The way i see it, if you fuck up your timing and premarurely drop flares, you should be rewarded with a rocket up your ass. If they simply nerf the stinger there wont be a single fucking reason to use it.

Wait, what? Stingers don't take two shots to disable vehicles? They did in the beta. I haven't even bothered using them for that reason.

This game needs a fucking patch. It's so obnoxious that we have to wait for important (MOUSE INPUT) fixes while they re-balance things and add horns. That's gettin' your fucking priorities straight.

Rush is pretty bad and you play hardcore. I don't think you like Battlefield anymore.

The game is far from perfect, but it's still damn good. The biggest issues I see are the overwhelming abundance of linear, infantry heavy conquest maps, as well as map size and design in general, and kit design. M249 noobs everywhere, a horrifically gimped recon class, etc.

I don't know if I say it's "damn good", but then again it's all so painfully subjective it's a stupid argument. I don't even know really what exactly I dislike most in the game, I just know that I keep putting the game in and after several hours of MP I'm just simply not having very much fun. Not nearly as much as I've had before in the BF series at least. Hell, I think I even enjoyed Bad Company 2 more than this. I'm not bashing the game in the least though, for those who are enjoying it I am honestly more than happy for them and actually jealous b/c I am totally in love with the sound and look of the game. I just can't seem to have fun playing it. Sucks...

As with all MP games i find i'm having fun when i'm doing well and my team is decent. And i hate the game when things arnt going my way and it feels like you've been put on a team full of labotomised monkeys. Still lots of issues to fix too, namely server disconnects, and mics being choppy as fuck. Some balancing issues too. They just need to get a patch out the door, cos clearly them tweaking things server side is doing jack shit. They said they where fixing rubberbanding and it's worse then ever. With everything fixed tho the game will be a keeper. If they dont get it fixed before the 14th i'm trading it for skyrim.

Yeah it's kinda weird that the map designs are kinda weak. Map designs were one of the strongest elements of previous Battlefield titles.

They're not all bad.. I really dig stuff like Operation Firestorm (and Caspian Border, and Kharg Island) but there's not enough of it. It's also pretty silly how large the boundaries of that map are, considering how clustered the flags are (even in "large" mode). The 64 player versions of most maps are really poorly executed compared to their 32 player counterparts. Operation Metro is probably the most telling thing here. Every map, every mode! lol..

I'm actually fond enough of the infantry gameplay that maps like Bazaar can be pretty fun too, but they break with large player counts very quickly. 32 can seem like too much for some of those levels.. especially Metro :D

I think 2 weeks is more then enough for all the shit that should have been fixed in the first place. Hell, what exactly was the beta test for? Cos aside from falling through maps, there are still server disconnects, still tons of lag, still squad issues, still mic issues, still balancing issues. And as far as falling through maps is concerned, the only reason that is no longer an issue is because they've turned of terrain deformation. Are we ever going to get it back in working order? Or is that their idea of a permanent fix? Just turn it off entirely.

They have a quote on battlelog saying 'playing with friends has never been this easy' that right there is false advertising. Because i've never seen a game struggle with so many basic elements. They've almost nailed the core gameplay, but christ almighty, can we PLEASE have mics that actually work? It would certainly make the whole team play element easier. As it stands the game is more fun playing solo without friends, then it is playing with them. That is not in anyway acceptable imo.

It feels like a developers first attempt at a MP game. And yet dice are suposed to be well versed in this stuff. What the hell is going on?

No it doesn't, but you're not going to get an argument from me about what should or could be fixed by now. I think the mouse input bug should have been a day one hotfix. But they're bundling things into a larger patch, clearly.. and doing hotfixes on consoles is a clusterfuck thanks to the certification hoops that MS (and yes--Sony!) make developers go through prior to getting fixes out. A two week timer is a weird thing to hold over the game. If you're going to give up on it quickly, you should have just waited longer (like you said you were going to in the first place).

I wish i did wait longer tbh, cos in it's current state the game is a bit of a joke. Thought more effort would be made going up againt cod? Guess not.

they have been shit ever since they were purchased by EA. Patches take forever to come out and they stop supporting the big games very quickly.

I really wonder what would happen if Valve decided to develop a Battlefield style game, it would be much better than anything Dice has put out since BF2142 or BF1942.

Stop supporting big games quickly? Man they supported BC2 for a loooooooong time. It was spread out but it never really stopped. Same with BF2.
I'd even go so far to say as their support is only second to Bungie. At least from my experience.

Also I'm really confused about the complaints about mics. I have friends who have really shitty mics and they sound so good through the game.

Frankly I'm starting to wonder if they just let Modern Warfare affect their choices with this game too much.

Back to Karkand will address my issue with level design by adding more variety back into the game. Stuff like hp/armor regen and the wacky kit design is just a result of catering to the dumbest players.

And yet, it's still very good. It's certainly not the BF3 I wanted, nor is it the BC3 that people have accused it of being. It's simply a more unique title than that. BF3 is its own thing.

Probably been already asked but my biggest gripe wih BF3 is the lack of ability to leave a game before it starts!

Don't get me wrong I'm not a player who'll leave because other people have or because of the map isn't the type I want but really? Forcing me to start a game so I can accrue % games quit? I feel a little cheated.

I agree in each case. The large maps have the flags too close. I agree on the good maps ... and while I like the infantry combat this time the - in destruction + too many choke points = crappy choke point spamming. Not. Fun. Considering it lacks the CS/CoD gunplay to allow resolution.

Btw, there is some serious latency in the game.

After a couple weeks, roughly 60hours of play, I can say with confidence that this game is no where near the scale of epicness that BF1942 or BF2 was.

BF3's biggest map is smaller than BF2s smallest map. There are not nearly as many vehicles, weapon diversity, or intuitive design for that matter.

And I'm afraid that once the graphics go stale (which I've already gotten used to), this game will literally have nothing going for it longevity wise that its predecessors did.

... Then there's the bugs.

In my opinion it's all very lack luster, and sad when it comes down to it. I know why they didn't release the Karkand pack at the same time now.

I'm not all doom and gloom about it, but I do agree for the most part. I still think the game is quite good, but I also think that too many concessions have been made in this franchise for the lonewolf and the infantry only players. And as a result, the game starts to lose its identity completely. To me, this is easily one of the least recognizable games in the franchise. That calls back to an earlier point I made about its individuality. There are shades of BF2 here--and at times Counter Strike, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty and Bad Company. No one of those things overwhelms me.. and the result is something that's actually a little fresh. It's just not as good as Battlefield 2.

I think the infantry gameplay is pretty great, really. I think the vehicle combat is pretty good too, but it's taken a step backwards. And in both, there are simply too many things here built around the solo player (regen, kit design, etc). One of the great things about previous Battlefield games is how much you had to depend on other classes. That's one of the things that really made it work.

I actually think the core infantry mechanics (gunplay, movement, etc) are among the most solid the franchise has ever offered. It almost makes it more unfortunate. Do you guys remember that design document that leaked years ago for this game? It might have been bullshit, but at the time it seemed that they were ramping up things like the chain of command instead of removing them entirely! If you took some of the ideas present in that document and mixed them with the core mechanics of this game, the result could have been the best team shooter ever. Right now, it's simply the best team shooter of the year (sorry Red Orchestra, I haven't played you yet!). It's still a very good game.

I still think it possible that BF3 will have legs. We'll see. I doubt I'll hit the 1000+ hour mark though. We'll see!

The IR scopes are basically cheating :D

The F2000 is still my new favorite assault rifle. I hope they keep it relatively strong after the first patch.

What guns do people recommend with loadouts for each class?

I don't have many unlocks and would like some advice on what I should be working toward. I like playing Assault, Recon, and Eng. Recon is nerfed and Eng. has some lame rifles at the beginning.

F2000! F2000! And A-91 for Engi. I can't speak much for Recon or Support right now, but the M249 sure is popular.

And the IR sights are just hax.
