They would look even better off screen, and considerably worse if they were actually 720p.

Right there in plain English.. what was yours again? Oh right.. that some selective super-sampled photomode pics look better than some random off screen grabs. Compelling argument!

Off screen pics are still bullshit though.

Off screen shots are a joke.
Yea, offscreens are capable of some often misleading conclusions as to a game's visuals, but when anyone is playing a game on their HDTV that's how they see it.

It's true that any game will look better running off an HDTV (hence my signature :P) , but offscreen advantages aside, it isn't like it added textures or shaders, screwed with the reflections or altered the scrapes and damage to be anything other than what they really are in the actual game. Those shots represent things that are actually in Forza 2. It it won't always look that good due to angles and such and it clearly still doesn't hold a candle to GT no matter how we try to look at it, but it definitely doesn't look as horrific as some of the worst screens posted.

I wonder when we'll get some new gameplay vids of Forza 3 :(

Would be cool if they did an awesome trailer like what was done for NFS shift.

I really don't see how anyone could make that statement after playing Forza 2 and PGR4 back to back, it's even noticeable in the images. Some of F2's car models are either taken straight from Forza 1 but with added polygons or they ended up using the same blueprints containing inaccurate car proportions.

Maybe it's due to the cost but I think more devs should just use scanning laser tech to get the basic framework of the car models and then work from there.

BTW ACERT, Millhouse is going to believe whatever he wants to believe regardless of how technical and how right you may be...
You are sort of right dude. Let's see if they get that S2000 you like so much this time around.
The offscreen shots discussion
Honestly, like Grift said, off-screen shots are damn useless and not representative of the game. I can't believe we see those shots over and over. I've seen those shots with BMW since........how many E3's ago?

This. I am happy someone noticed I was snagging shots of gameplay rather than the photomode shots that obscure the issues seen in realtime. Thanks rayy.

Btw, I know a developer researching techniques that attempt to add post-processing similar to what is seen in offscreen shots.

Would be good, but tbh newer high contrast ratio plasma tv's can almost achieve this and i suppose when OLED tv's find their way into our homes, this kind of post-processing will no longer be necessary.

According to Teamxbox, which has been accurate on a number of pre-release Xbox news before, is making it seem like the next Xbox is being lined up for some 3D television technology or something like that.

Acert is that even possible without a big performance hit and then where does it stop and what will have to be sacrificed? Maybe the game's lighting? Maybe texture resolution? Poly sacrifice? How do you achieve something that looks like that and not lose something else potentially major as well. Or can it be a good substitute for slacking off on lighting?

No problem!

Photomode pictures are not a real representation of what you see when playing the game. Thats why I always wait to see real gameplay pictures and I never believe photomode!

3D Tv still has a long way to come around. Not to mention we just had a jump in tech from SD to HD TV in recent years.

To get back on FM3: Turn10 said they're going to include more classic cars. I hope they'll get in some more classic racing cars and not just the Ferrari and Ford GT 40 like last time... in fact I just want a single car, the 917, preferable with Gulf and/or Martini Racing paint job. It's my favourite race car of all time.

Some vid to prove my point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gvuUTiBtho&feature...

btw: I looooooved the looks of the Lola Aston Martin in this years Le Mans, particularly the one with the classic Gulf paint job. In fact it reminded me of tthe 917. I hope they include that one, too. I just don't feel the love for a diesel, no matter how fast they are.

Nah, they outright said that rumor wasn't true. It's also technically 1up's Natal rumor. They are the ones that started that rumor and it isn't true.

http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/19960/Rumor-New-Xbox...
Over recent years, we have received information on Microsoft's future plans for the Xbox platform, and that's why, among other topics, we extensively covered 3DV Systems' Z-Cam. Avid TeamXbox.com readers know we were the first publication to report that Microsoft signed IBM to create the CPU for the Xbox 360 (at a time when no one would believe Microsoft and IBM would work together or that the Xbox platform would use a non-x86 CPU) and that Microsoft was doing research on video-based motion sensing.

Today, I can tell you that I have obtained the first details on the next Xbox (info that we'll reveal in the coming weeks) and that's why we can confirm that the rumor reported by 1UP is false. Microsoft is NOT launching a new, upgraded Xbox 360 disguised as a new Xbox in 2010 (although built-in Natal technology is a possibility for a new edition of the Xbox 360, similar to the Elite or Arcade flavors).

It's not our intention to tease you, but for now the only thing I'm going to say about everything I heard regarding the next Xbox is that it won't launch until a certain type of television becomes more widespread because... (be sure to check out our Twitter account to learn more)

Well let me just say this. It would be PATHETIC that ANY new console would depend on a specific type of TV in any considerable way.

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about "3D TVs", but it sounds way far ahead when people are just starting to get into the "HD Era". Now, the article says until a certain type of TV becomes more widespread........more? So that means it's already out there, which probably means it just 1080P TVs, or OLED TV's at best. There is no way ANYONE can expect consumers to buy new TVs, not within at least 5 years (and by then we NEED to have new consoles already).

So in other words, I think this article is pretty damn meaningless, and crappy if "true" (what the hell is true here? lol).

I doubt it DEPENDS on a specific type of television, but it may be the case that they feel you get the best experience possible from such a television :)

Ok so I did some googling, and this 3D TV thing sounds way off into the future. These guys have some barely working prototypes, but that's all. And it's not even about that. It's about what you can sell, and again, I don't expect people to run out and buy a new TV until at the very least 5 years from now.

Also, if the TV needs a video source specifically created for it to be able to display in 3D--as Team Xbox implies by saying it would be a feature of the Xbox--it would be just nuts. How about all the broadcasts, who will support this thing? The answer is no one in a very long time. This is long off.

Of course, who am I to say that, but it just seems like common sense to me.

I'm sure it would not depend on it entirely, just like playing in SD vs HD. But I think using a 3D TV would totally change the experience, not just enhance it like the situation we had back when the 360 came out. That would be a major negative.

Depends on how the TV works and if it requires 2 framebuffers slightly offset. That said a lot of 3D technology works fine with games that use a z-buffer as you cann collect the relative depth of objects from that.

You know what I think devs should try Acert? It may sound a bit ridiculous, but I think it has potential. What about flat out placing -- almost like an in-game gui that is always on screen -- a rectangular light source that fully encompasses the entire size of the screen. Not only is that light source there, but anything on the inside of that rectangular light source can receive and reflect that light.

Even if the effect is at first unrealistic, I think they could accomplish something potentially really cool like that.
