definately an improvement over halo 3 visually, but it still doesnt look "zomg" to me. i'd even go as far as saying there are better looking games on the xbox already. good to see bungie catching up tho from a technical view point. now it's just a mater of it playing as good as halo 1 did.

Everything seems like a big jump from H3.

Looking forward to Civvie vehicles as well, hopefully that includes passengers firing from them.

Saw the scans, and honestly...I can't make much of it. Neither in favour or against it. It's too unclear to tell. Obviously, the models are higher poly and such and I'm sure it's technically improved in certain area's compared to H3.

But, those scans don't do anything for me. I need to see some good quality gameplay footage to make a fair judgement.

Given the game's scope, it could be the most impressive game on 360, if not overall.

I love how Bungie plays with colours, even though the game's supposed to have dark mood, they still put bright orange vehicle in there. Just awesome.

ok saw the scans crappy quality but it still looks amazing, the page 6 halo 3 to reach comparison said it all Bravo Bungie.
- Reach will NOT follow the book, Fall of Reach.

- We play as Spartan IIIs. Jorge is the only Spartan II on the team, and as a result is larger.

- Carter 259 and Kat 320 are the only members of their original squad.

- Jorge is a heavy weapons specialist.

- "Skully" now has a name, Emile 239. He's the silent type of the game.

- The sniper is called Jun 266. He's thoughtful and taciturn.

- We can customise the appearance of the Lone Wolf by a small degree. Awesome.

- The game is apparently darker than any of the other Halo games, even more so than ODST.

- Human Insurrectionists are possibly in the game

- Bungie have once again made the Covenant more dangerous and frightening, as they were in Halo 1.

- Covenant soldiers no longer speak English, they speak in their own languages.

- A new enemy like a Jackal has been introduced, named a "Skirmisher." They are deadly and cunning enemies that attack in packs, and flank secure positions.

- Graphics have been improved drastically, as proven by in-magazine comparisons.

- Elites are back, and are more ferocious than ever.

- Larger scale combat will be in Reach. Where only 20 AI at a time could be on screen in Halo 3, now over 40 AI and 20 vehicles can be present at a time.

- Scenes are more cinematic.

- Noble Team splits up at a point in the story, but it seems they soon get back together.

- Health Bar is back along with energy shield.

- Single shot rifle like the Halo 2 E3 demo is in the game, named the Designated Marksman Rifle (DRM)

- Sniper, AR and Magnum make a return. Gun sounds are more realistic.

- Needler Rifle is in the game, a mid-range headshot capable weapon.

- Spike Grenades and Flame Grenades are out. Only frags and plasma remain.

- Helicopter Transport is called the Falcon.

- Civillian vehicles are now drivable.

- Fully stealthy gameplay is now possible.

- Assassinations are possible with a knife by holding down the melee button.

- Sprinting is now possible through an equipment like mechanic.

- Spirits, the Covenant drop ship in CE, return in Reach, alongside Phantoms.

- Grunts look a lot more menacing.

- Motion Tracker seems compressed, like an oval rather than the Halo 3 circle.

- Hud is yellow rather than blue.

- Marines look vaguely like Halo 1 marines.

- Phantoms now have a flashlight, like the one seen in the ODST announcement trailer.

- Elites seem taller, and are no longer hunched.

- All features from Halo 3 (Forge, Theatre, Co-op) make a comeback along with several new ones.

- We will be shown what Reach looks like before it is destroyed. We will see the levels of destruction progress as we get further through the game, implying the game takes place over a longish period of time.
No other dev does it like Bungie, the wait will now be unbearable.

Sounds good. As I said before I would sacrifice some pixels if it means large scale combat (a lot of enemy AI, vehicles, and 4+ coop sandbox battles) so this was nice to hear.

- Armour ability swaps (i.e. sprint, cloak etc.) definitely indicates some kind of quasi-class system. Allowing weapon load outs would be a massive change to Halo multiplayer though.

- Big changes in MP mechanics mean changes in map design also. Playing the Halo maps with selectable armor abilities would break it very quickly.
If the game (both features + map design) are balanced with the new features in consideration it should be a huge issue if Bungie has the skill to adapt to new concepts. Very few companies have successfully migrated from one major franchise/design to the next (disregarding incremental evolutions) with success.

I am sure there were a lot of people who when Bungie talked about their design concepts (vehicles with foot troops, instant access to melee and grenades, new health system with rebounding shields, 2 weapon limit, radar, etc) and suggested dozens of potential MP variants that (a) a lot of people scoffed and (b) thought it impossible to balance such a wild design compared to the uber balanced Quakes, Counterstrikes, and UTs of the day.

What will hold Bungie back is
(a) being married to old design concepts and having a difficulty to re-invent, and
(b) a fear of fans calling everything "new" as "broken" because it doesn't match their preconceived idea of how a Halo game should work.

One of the reasons Halo took off is Bungie was willing to use technological advances to implement new ideas where a lot of other studios were content with their "tried and true" concepts. At some point Bungie will need to grow up. The question is if it will be with Halo--and if Halo is destined to the path of Doom, Quake, and Unreal or if it can re-invent itself while being true to care game concepts.

Hopefully, Bungie doesn't consider weapons spawning in fields as a "core" game concept.

I'm blown away someone doubting the graphical quality of this game already. Some people have crappy scans I suppose, but I have the magazine and what I see looks amazing, especially considering the incredible scale, number of enemies, vehicles and lighting. The models are also totally sick. I don't know how anyone could seriously doubt it, but that isn't important, it's celebration time baby. Finally the floodgate is open :D

Not really fair rubbing it in that you have scans :/ Btw, 40 AI, 20 vehicles, and large open battlefields = exactly what I wanted. If they have 4-6 player coop (and maybe a major twist... I would love a sandbox mode where you could be on the covenant against friends and direct them in battle!!) this should be a nice change of pace. I hope we don't end up with a fairly linear game. I can handle sandbox to sandbox with linking sections, but Halo 3 was quite linear.

Deft: MW2 actually has a lot of AI at times. I am not sure of 40 on screen at a time, but surely "areas" with that many + vehicles. Of course their AI is done differently, but it worked well for their game. I liked it, a lot actually. Some more scenes of AI ambushes would be nice. A little plot specific scripting isn't horrible. Some of my favorite Halo 3 sequences (like the bridge where you fought with the flood) had a bit of general scripting.

I will sleep well tonight.

Haha sorry Acert, don't worry, in due time they'll be uploaded on Bungie's and Gameinformer's site.

In other words, Bungie thought making them speak was dumb. Talk about backpedaling. How is this going to be explained in the story? It won't. Nice.

Well I thought the Grunts speaking a bit in Halo 1 was awesome. But then everybody starts to have almost philosophical conversation is perfect English. I thought it was a bit silly--they could have used subtitles.

It's part of their plan to make the Covenant appear more scary or mysterious. The Covenant was truly still a very large unknown quantity to a lot of people.

Very few have ever seen a covenant invasion force as large as something like this. They usually just glassed the hell out of planets. I believe it was as of Cote D Azur that they started showcasing any sort of real interest in the planets.

Also, I made a mistake earlier, it isn't just 20 dynamic lights for Reach, it's 20-40 dynamic lights.

Also, if people look at the "The New Tech" page, you'll notice that you can spot the same exact satellite or gun looking object in the background as we saw in the released artwork.

lol you say that as if you don't get what I was trying to say. The covenant were simply far more of a mystery during these times and Bungie is emphasizing that with the game.

It vibes fairly well with the book. Well, it sure as hell sounds like the cinematics will be far better. They even talk about using a military documentary style with how they go about in a lot of instances. I would point out examples, but you've probably already read it.

Bungie confirmed in the article full feature parity with Halo 3 in terms of multiplayer. That would indicate at least 4 player co-op, saved films, screenshots, 16 person vs MP. Whether it goes beyond that remains to be seen. I think we can consider Firefight a given.

At some point, Noble squad split up with part of the campaign seeing Noble Six and the squad leader undertaking a mission separated from the others. Now, if four player co-op is confirmed, clearly that has to be handled somehow so it doesn't rule out six player co-op but I'm not so sure that'll happen and/or whether we'll even get to play as the other Spartans.

Clearly, the most interesting scenario would be 6 player co-op / Firefight and the ability to play as the different squad members with their respective abilities making a difference to gameplay.
Deft: MW2 actually has a lot of AI at times. I am not sure of 40 on screen at a time, but surely "areas" with that many + vehicles. The AI in MW2 and Halo 3 are worlds apart. I'm not saying that COD has no AI or that Halo 3 has no scripting, they clearly utilise both. However, Halo 3's AI actors have around 40+ states/behaviours. It's nothing like as complex in MW2.

That said, to the player the most important thing is the gameplay created, however it is derived. MW2 is a great game and Bungie are on record as having paid attention to what Infinity Ward were able to do with their scripting. Hopefully they'll combine the best of both worlds.

I don't honestly recall a scene in MW2 that involves 20+ enemies though?

That's easy. They were only able to understand the covenant after Halo:CE because Cortana learned their language after they were able to capture that Covenant ship and returned to Reach.

Whenever Bungie includes Grunts as well, I'm not sure. They should speak english, but I'm happy that Elites are speaking gibberish again. *WORT WORT WORT* :)

Edit: Acert, are you serious about the MW2 AI? That was the dumbest single most annoying piece of shit AI I've ever played against. They knew your exact whereabouts although it was impossible for them to see you. They were firing exactly your way whenever you entered their room/alley. This is the reason why I never attempted to play it through on veteran.

I loved how Elites were done in Halo:CE. They were somewhat unpredictable in their behaviour. There were moments when they'd just rush you, when they were on their own they'd seek cover. There were rooms filled with elites that let me literally think how I am supposed to overcome them. Especially the bridges in AotCR were challenge on their own with golden sword wielding Elites or a pair of Red ones at the end of it.

That together with a health bar will hopefully bring back the tension of the first game.
