Seems like a lot of those bungie guys are similar to me.

I'm mostly an SP guy myself. I don't bother too much with the multi side of things in a lot of console games, besides specific titles like NBA 2K, but Reach and hopefully Bad Company 2 may change that.

I pray that isn't their big January 12th update... :P

It's hard to regurgitate news and have it actually contain relevant information anyway. There's not a snowballs chance that it didn't land on NeoGAF prior to landing here prior to landing there. I'm actually a little shocked (and maybe appalled) that Eurogamer actually re-posted and paraphrased content from Game Informer.. but at least it went into some depth.

Yeah I'm not thrilled with the grit and realism they're trying to invoke with the over-accessorizing of character models. At this point it looks more like they're trying to hide and gloss over the fact that they're spartans, instead of being all FUCK YEAH WE'RE SPARTANS, BITCH!

It is sorta explained away by them being III's, and that's hugely why I'm willing to let it go, but yeah, certainly feeling you.

I don't think they're especially different than the stuff we already see in Halo 3 multiplayer, at least, not enough to make them look any more generic or less Halo-y.

But seriously, how can you look more like a generic space commando dude than Master Chief already does, anyway?

Well, I can't speak for Fren, obviously, but for me it's about the kinda physical representation of the armor. I mean it's about heightened fidelity but it's also about a grittier, more realistic take. The armor MC wears has a somewhat hyper-real quality to it, if not cartoony. It's really clean and bright and it kinda pops the way things generally do in Halo games. They have that bordering on neon candy look if you will.

Reach has more armor-esque armor, visibly worn down and scratched, and they treat them less like.. essentially the super hero costume MC wears.. and more like disposable armor that you can just doodle on and fuck up. That realism brings them closer to your average marine, and the muted colours take off even more of the distinctive look.

I'm not really keen on that personally. I enjoy the Turtles vibe you get from a stark, contrasting colour of another spartan the way "The Package" portrayed them. This game's style makes them pretty non-descript, but that's presumably traded for more human traits aswell. They're prolly going to have some kind of interaction the way the ODSTs did and thus they won't just be a proxy for heroism like MC is.

But hey, a bit of a fun psychological experiment for you. Insert the Halo 3 chief in the Reach trailer and watch REALITIES COLLIDE AND CHEMICAL REACTION MAKING THE WHOLE THING BLOW UP. There is a bordering on jarring difference between this and the Chief's shenanigans.. and to be honest it was there in some capacity in ODST aswell.

The terrified cynic in me is quick to point to the popularity of Modern Warfare and REAL ARMY STUFF, but a more objective and cautious statement is prolly somewhere along the lines of simply giving Reach its own tone. I just hope that if MC is ever brought into play again, he won't find that his own franchise has "grown up" and doesn't play with "toys" anymore.

Although I can see what you're trying to say here, I think it's actually a nice change from the flashy floaty Halo standard. It's going to be Battlefield meets Halo. Good shit if you ask me

Yeah, sure, I enjoy it when franchises can have some room to move around, tonally, but it's a difficult thing to backpedal on unless they're careful with it.

Star Wars is a nice example of something where the fiction is very dynamic and they're able to do that, but when you can't even imagine some events from one game occuring in the "reality" of the other, it gets kinda weird. I hope they don't jump the shark, that's all.

And then there's the whole thing with the.. Halo having a unique visual identity and now it's.. kinda moving in under the whole.. "all the Xbox has is gritty, brown and gray war shooters!" banner, where nobody - no matter the fanboyant power cocktail - used to be able to justify placing it. It could very well be that soon, Halo is another gritty brown war shooter, and that's not good shit if you ask ME. :)

lol you say that as if you don't get what I was trying to say. The covenant were simply far more of a mystery during these times and Bungie is emphasizing that with the game.

It vibes fairly well with the book. Well, it sure as hell sounds like the cinematics will be far better. They even talk about using a military documentary style with how they go about in a lot of instances. I would point out examples, but you've probably already read it.
Well I didn't see how what you said (and still don't I think) has to do with the covenant suddenly changing their language to English. You are trying to exterminate humans, but take their (one of them at least) language hmn....I guess they really liked English.

Did I just dream this, or wasn't the whole language thing explained by some thing in their headgears? I could swear I heard something about that in relation to Halo 2.

Hmnn, I don't remember that. Headgear on who? (1) The humans or (2) the covenant? If it's 1 that would explain why we understand what they say in English, but if it's 2 that doesn't explain why they would speak English or why we would listen to what they speak as English. "There are those who said this day will never come...."

I think there were some cool things in there of course, and some good voice acting. I still think it's a weak part of the story unless I'm missing something.

From Halo wiki:

Covenant language translation software intercepted human COM transmissions after The Battle of Harvest, and thus the Covenant learned English quickly.[3] From 2525 to 2552, the Covenant used this knowledge mainly to broadcast florid curses at Human colonies and ships before destroying them, and never actually held conversation with Humans.

UNSC translation software has been able to decrypt a number of Covenant languages, most notably those of the Grunts, Elites, and Prophets. By the time of the Battle of Earth, this software could automatically interpret everything the other races said, and has apparently been installed in the equipment of all UNSC military personnel, as all personnel appear to have the ability to understand what members of these races are saying.[4] This is the reason that Grunts, Elites, Brutes, and Prophets heard in Halo 2 seem to be speaking English. Some of the members of the Covenant know how to speak English, mainly Elites and Grunts.

________

Yeah, not a dream then.

Yeah, ok. So when we are watching these cutscenes with the prophets talking all philosophical and stuff, brutes and elites speaking perfect English.......we are hearing English because of that software? Even though there is no spartan involved in the scene. I guess my question is if this is ever explained within the game, if I need a book for understanding such a simple point in the story, well that's just weak.

I think the cutscenes where there is only covenant involved are ridiculous because they make it seem as if the covenant just decided to use English instead of their own language.

Well, what makes Halo cool is that it's very widely credible on that true army/military feel, at least it sure as hell is in the books, but then it also has these other really cool things about it that really make the universe so damn interesting. Reach, especially with the outright intruduction of a true command structure that you basically answer to within Noble Team, Carter (Commander), Kat (Lieutenant Commander), I think has a chance to epitomize that aspect of Halo showcased rather well in the books better than any Halo game before it.

The stuff that modern warfare does well with regards to real army stuff, are things that Halo should've been doing already, but Bungie was a bit late to the party or simply just wasn't channeling it with the same degree of quality. If Halo Reach accomplishes that, but then also cleverly works in all of the other amazing things that make the Halo Universe so awesome, then there is just not many limits to what they can achieve with their creativity. There's the what's the covenant up to aspect to all this. There's the opportunity to see just what kind of destruction or devastation they've left behind. There's actually getting the opportunity to see how a team of Spartans react to what has taken place, how the command structure within Noble Team operates and reacts to events as they are unfolding. Will we see the introduction of any sort of higher command structure, more importantly the one that directly oversees these Spartans?

I'm just now happy that when Bungie does their thing, it will now ooze with a similar or superior level of quality and production value as displayed by a number of other titles, chief among them, Modern Warfare. That doesn't mean it needs to copy modern warfare, but I'll be damned if I'm the only person that expected to see the kind of quality present in so many aspects of Modern Warfare's SP campaign, not so much the story, but in how they present their set pieces or attempt to further immerse the player to make them believe that they are really in the kind of situation that they are in.

I have a strong feeling that Infinity Ward will soon step into Halo territory with futuristic combat involving a dangerous alien species. It's a natural progression for them, I think, and they are certainly capable of doing something incredible in that area.

I think the reason we hear the english is because we're supposed to know what they're talking about. :)

I mean I wouldn't wanna trade Half-Jaw's and The Arbiter's exchange in front of the Elites for pretend speak. I think Halo 2 has some really classic lines, delivered in a superb way. "If they've come to hear me BEG, they'll be DISAPPOINTED." "Even on my knees, I do not belong in their presence." and I could rattle off like 10 more. :)

Meh, let's end this. I just think it just doesn't fit. Science fiction has limits. Good stories are explained, in reasonable ways.
