NS It depends on what we were looking for - Cartographer is a great example of solid level design that is in many ways non-linear but still has a focused objective. We talk about that and Flawless Cowboy. We talked about how to bring back some of that magic that was in Halo: CE. I'd say there's a lot of good high action examples from all three games.
CO Certainly, The Covenant from Halo 3 - that's a good example of on-foot, vehicle, on-foot. That was a long mission but it never felt long because you were constantly changing what you were doing. That's absolutely one of the missions I look at.
NS Certainly the missions that offer choice and replayability and allow you to attack in multiple ways, whether through a vehicle or different weapons. It's very important we retain that while the rest of the industry goes in the direction of very exacting, linear, almost movie-like levels that play the same way every time. We definitely are conscious that the strengths of Halo lie heavily in the ability to immerse players in this organic sandbox, and depending on how the player players it changes. Memorable, personal and specific things is what I love Halo for. That's what we want to drive the missions in Reach.

another thing i think they should definately bring back, at least for single player. is invulnerable warthogs. maybe then we can get some of the magic from halo: CE in there. warthog jump anyone?
silent cartographer was definately the peak for the whole series as far as missions structure and level design goes. it felt open, when it really wasnt, and it was fun. they never quite managed to reach that quality again tho, both in halo CE, nor the next 3 games they released. if reach can be that good on a consistant basis, then i may finally find a halo game i can enjoy since CE.
Man this game will own!!

One thing I regret the most that will miss Halo Reach is three way battles from Halo1&2. It was super fun triggering encounters between Covenant and Flood or Sentinels and joining the battle whenever you felt like it. Or maybe there will be sentinels in Reach? Would be cool.

The Spartan III program timeline matches up nicely with the possibility of Spartan IIIs being on Reach. There is even a hint in Ghosts of Onyx from Ackerson that there were other Spartan III related operations going that Kurt was not made aware of.
It's also clear from First Strike that there was quite a bit more going on on Reach than ONI let on.
First there is the NOVA planet destroyer bombs, then there is the hidden parts of the ONI underground facility and the fact that there was some weird technology hidden down there that the Covenant referred to as the "Holy Light" that possessed the ability to bend both time and space. According to Dr. Halsey, it actually placed the Master Chief, Cortana and everyone else that was with him shortly after the events of Halo : CE, on an event path to ensure that he would make it back to Reach on time to save them.

Aside from the super AA, these Reach screenshots, as far as textures and resolution are concerned, look legit. In fact, some would tell you that they don't look very impressive at all, aside from the model improvements.
In fact, I expect the final game to look better than these screens. I've seen real Halo 3 bullshots before, these Reach screens, however, look like a much more honest impression of what the game actually looks like currently, or at least pre - thanksgiving. You think these are Reach bullshots? Mark my words, we haven't seen Reach bullshots just yet lol. Eventually later this year we'll see screens that look so good and won't be at all representative of the final game, but these sure as hell aren't them, besides the AA.
According to a bungie artist that worked on this level, it's supposedly still just a 1st pass attempt.

I mean, do you see the AA going on in those pics? I strongly suspect we won't be getting anything close to that....which doesn't go a long way towards making it look better.
Zapp Brannigan: If we can hit that bull's-eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards...Checkmate.
I mean it's getting a little bit rediculous the way people hype one another up about this. Don't any of you ever take the wait and see approach, sprinkled with a bit of "oh yeah, there was that Halo 2 leadup.. and that Halo 3 leadup.. and that ODST leadup..." skepticism?
I dunno, I think some people here make realistic remarks about what kind of tech we can expect, and then other people rush in and "STRONGLY SUSPECT" differently, because LOOK AT THIS QUOTE FROM PERSON SAYING IT LOOKS AMAZING. It's like you're not even speaking the same language.

I can say I strongly suspect this about a game, I can say strongly suspect that about a game. Is that an implicit sign of certainty? Nope, it isn't. It's just an indication of how good a feeling I have about the game. What the hell is a forum coming to when others seemingly become offended at someone's excitement about a game?
People are free to have their own opinions, I say remove the sticks from your behinds.
How many times have I pointed out that I know the AA won't look that good? It still doesn't change my core point. I'm talking about the overall look of the game artistically and when whatever final visual polishes get tossed in and we get to see it in motion, you know, since the game is like 8 or 9 months away from release and all.
Also, don't give me any crap about some ODST lead up. What ODST lead up? I knew that game was going to be crap the moment it was announced to be some sort of Halo 3 expansion. Hell, it isn't my fault some of you were stupid enough to fall for it.
Anyway, in other potentially huge news, it seems that Kurt aka Spartan 051 and Mendez knew about Noble Team and were seemingly doing it behind Ackerson's back!? That's friggin awesome!

I don't mind excitement, I'm a constant champion of enthusiasm even. It just gets WEIRD when you try to enter into serious discussion where one side clearly has intimate knowledge with what this could reasonably end up being, and the other goes in with hopes and dreams.
I AM excited about this game and that's exactly why this back and forth annoys me. This thread is 37 pages long and the majority of time is spent going "I CHALLENGE YOUR TECH BREAKDOWN WITH MY KINDA SORTA HOPING IT'LL LOOK MAGICAL AND WONDERFUL!" and then having the tech guy come back with "when you say MAGICAL, do you mean animation or texture quality?".
I dunno, maybe I'm just tired.

I practically called that whole Operation PROMETHEUS angle before anyone else on Bungie's site :P Sure I was wrong about certain details, but hey, can't be perfect can we?
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=398...
My thread speaking about operation prometheus and the possibility that noble team may be survivors of that mission. Again, I'm wrong on certain details, but hey, at least there was SOME truth to it.
Another theory I came up with that was suggesting that Kurt - Spartan 051 could be Lone Wolf, now appears to be wrong though. I was way off on this one, but I gave it a valiant effort :)
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=403...
May be wrong, but one of my very personal favorite theories on how Lone Wolf could be an attempted clone or contain the genetic code of Linda Spartan-058, who was referred to as a Lone Wolf in Halo : First Strike
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=399...
The update bungie released today on the info regarding the Spartans and that letter which appears to be written by Kurt Spartan-051 is truly awesome stuff :D
Kurt and Mendez knowing about Noble Team is something I never thought about at all.

MS X10:
Running at a length of just four hours on Thursday 11th February, it’s set to be held at the Terra Event Center in San Francisco
You can expect to see footage and demonstrations of this years biggest titles such as Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Fable III, Final Fantasy XIII, Halo: Reach, Splinter Cell: Conviction amongst others. We’re sure that Project Natal is also set to feature, so we hope Microsoft will demonstrate some of the early titles for that.

Prepare To Drop!!
If MW2 did anything right it was reducing the amount of bullets needed to kill your opponents. It made the game a lot more sophisticated as a result. I'm hoping for the same with Reach. Everything we've seen and heard so far is pointing towards Reach being more frantic, more skill dependant and consistent. I mean they even confirmed they'll use hitscan detection this time, that's the biggest news in my eyes.
