I really didn't know the game appeared to have such a degree of character development. If I had known as much, I would've gotten it a long time ago. I've glanced at like 2 walkthrough vids and am pleasantly surprised.

The city is uninspiring, it's a deserted, boring place lacking in details. I usually enjoy Halo's symmetric looks, but they pushed it on this one. You walk for a few minutes from one end of the city to another just to see the exact same boring structure you just saw a few minutes ago, for the 20th time. Besides the first few trips, walking from one part of the city to another just feels rehashed.
And then the characters? Bungie tries to convey emotions with some truly outdated technology (animations). There's supposed to be some sort of love story going on which I was never able to tell whether it was a joke or real, but one thing is sure, that is one ugly ass woman.
I think ODST is a game worth playing, but not worth playing again (it's not worth having).

But while the campaign was fun, it wasn't anything too amazing IMO and the MP was the same only three new maps so nothing special there. If the game had added something truly new to the MP I think people would have responded to it a bit better.

The look of the map, the atrium and all the things I'm seeing vibe way too perfectly with the ship master chief, kelly and the rest of blue team, not including Kelly, snuck into to disrupt the Covenant at their rendezvous point where they were all gathering before they made the final approach to Earth prior to the events of Halo 2!

But in general we are back to large, flat objects with repetitive texturing decals. Which means with sub-HD, no/little AA, and no/little AF the image quality is going to be far more washed out than the supersized promoshots they are showing. The following, in particular, won't look substantially better than what was seen in Halo 3 when resolution is reduced to gameplay levels and IQ is turned to gameplay mode.

Oh Acert, if you read the IGN interview, they pretty much explain it there. All MP maps were made for MP first and foremost, and were then passed on to SP campaign team to incorporate into large SP play space.
However, the one in particular you linked to -- the one you think looks rather nice -- is a map that was designed first and foremost as an SP level, and is taken directly from the game's SP campaign, with minor modifications. It's also the map that is furthest along artistically.

Today I got to attend a playtest sesssion at the user research labs. Over the last couple of weeks we’ve had about 40 folks come in and play our “Playtest 4” milestone build. We’ve been talking a bit on this site about our progress on the multiplayer side of things, but a lot has been going into campaign in parallel. Although we don’t test campaign at anywhere near the scale of the multiplayer Beta, we do do our fair share of testing campaign with real users.
PT4 wasn’t even the first lab test of campaign, and in fact, much of campaign has been playable in rough form for some time now, but for this milestone the team really cranked up the level of polish, with environments receiving lots of love across the board, AI getting smarter, a lot more cinematics showing up, and real mission dialogue getting in for the first time ever - in other words a lot of things falling in to place that make the campaign feel real. Although there’s a million things left to do in the time we have remaining, PT4 is the first time it felt like a pretty fair snapshot of the game.
Internally it’s very difficult to look at the game with fresh eyes. When you’ve run through the environment a thousand times you know exactly where to go and how you’re going to tackle the encounters. So for that reason there’s nothing like seeing people play through the campaign for the very first time with no preconceptions. Wish we could say more but wouldn’t want to give away any details…
Meanwhile the Public Beta is just around the corner. The team has been putting serious hours into the Internal Beta, making all sorts of final tweaks so that when it goes out to you all (in less than a month, holy blam!) it’s as polished an experience as it can be. On that note, off to get my Arena rating for the day.
