I'm guess it's random luck. I don't think it deflects like that all the time. Then again I haven't been in enough modes to try that.

Also 1 flag ctf you don't really have to run around a bunch of times to cap in headhunter. If you hit the bouncer right you can drop the flag at the top of your bounce right next to the cap point and someone can just take it the rest of the way in np.

Powerhouse is kind of a boring map. Headhunter is pretty decent.

I think I got that mixed up. Headhunter is a mode not a map. Which is a pretty cool mode btw. I simply meant that interior map, I can't remember the names.

Also Covy Slayer RULES SO HARD. Why don't more people vote for it? So fast and intense.

When does the Beta officially begin?
ODST owners will be able to access the Reach beta "late morning" PDT on Monday, May 3rd. Just put your ODST campaign disc in and select the Reach Beta menu option.

Late morning (Pacific Daylight Time) is as exact as we can get right now. As soon as the switch is flipped and the beta is active, we'll be sure to spread the word.

Big change needed: They need to make it once you change to spawn on someone to stays there. There isn't always enough time to change load out and pick who to spawn on.

AR tip #1. Don't fire until it is RED. The range on the AR is ridiculously SHORT.

AR tip #2. It seems to do better when bursting... need more testing on this. (a cross post)

It's still garbage (1 flag on Sword Base). The map just isn't very good. Compared to the Halo 3 beta maps, these maps are definitely inferior.

Hmm.. I'm not sure bursting really helps with the assault rifle. The fact is, right now you can charge someone and melee them twice before they have enough time to break your shields with the AR. They either need to nerf melee, which no one really wants, or buff the AR to fix this issue. Totally agree that they need to tweak the spawn system too, but isn't it so nice to have that option finally? I just wish you could hold your spawn until you were ready.

well i'm not happy about the two mellees before you can kill with the AR, i don't know why Bungie won't make that damn thing more powerful? maybe w/ few enough AR kills and a crazy amount of melee kills they will catch on and make the AR more powerful, it would be so much more fun to use if it did serious damage IMO.

Or make melee less usefull? I've seen a lot of statistics posted that indicate that the melee has the highest amounts of killing blows. The maps are very close quarters, but the gap to the second best weapon is very high. Increasing the power of the AR won't change that at all, you can't drop the shields as fast as someone can run up to you and drop your shields with a punch. People are complaining that you can play this game without firing a bullet by just sprinting to people and smacking them two times.

If that's the case (I still have to play the game before making final judgement), Bungie should make the melee do 70-80% shield damage, or even less. I really don't understand why they haven't done this since they obviously shortened the delay between melees. Their goal was to prolong combat, the melee is working against that.

Regardless of how it actually turns out to play, I don't like the fact that your shields are dropped to 0 at all. It's just a cheap method of leveling the playing field. It makes FFA deaths completely random and frustrating. And for FFA sake I hope they tone down the grenades a bit as well.

Really, they should just go back to how Halo 2 handeled melee and shields. It was bautifully ballanced. A punch in mid air would drop you to 0%, a punch while moving to 30-50% and a punch while standing still 75%. Two of them meant you were one shot and you could then decide if you went for the second melee or shot them in the head, the later usually took less time. Obviously this was destroyed by button glitches, but this hasn't been topped ever since.

I haven't seen how to spawn on people yet? I didn't know it was there. I'll have to look better next time.

I think maybe the accuracy just needs to be upped for the AR? I guess it serves the purpose Bungie have for it though...

Also I'm not sure if it's just me but I hope the executions get more work/polish. When I come from the side or front and I hold down melee it would be cool to get the execution? It seems to mainly work from the back only. It also just seems so underwhelming. Like why would I ever do this? Not really satisfying at all and I can't even tell what's going on most of the time. Just hitting someone is simply better.

It's only supposed to work from the back. It'd be horribly frustrating to be shooting someone only to have them run straight up to you and perform an execution.

Well as it stands right now, I think it should be more accessible. Maybe not from the front so much just from all other angles.
Maybe I am just spoiled from Gears where you completely split someone in half with a chainsaw. These executions just seem boring.

Nah, most of the assassination animations are pretty boring so far.. and the act itself is pretty pointless. I've done it a few times, but until there's more variety it doesn't even seem like much of a replacement for a good tea-bagging. Plus, I always feel like you have to tea-bag someone post assassination just to rub it in anyway. And Tinks, after you select your loadout you can press up or down on the d-pad to cycle through spawns. It allows you to pick a teammate to spawn on, but you don't have nearly enough time to make a good selection with the current spawn times.

Thanks to the weak AR, it's currently pretty likely that someone will rush you and melee you 2x in the time it would take you to break their shields anyway.

I like Halo 3/Reach melee, I just think they need to make a few other weapons stronger to compensate. The DMR should be a 4SK, the Needle Rifle needs less bloom, and the AR should do more damage.

I don't mind the melee as it rewards assassinations and getting behind people and less of the "run and melee" draws. But the AR needs to be better--a tad more range and a good 20% more powerful. the game is bullet sponges right now. The DMR needs to be 3 body 1 head--increase the bloom if you have to, but it is not effective enough right now. Neddle rifle needs less bloom as you say or do more damage.

I really don't like the gun balance.

Yeah, I agree. I seriously hope some of this is tweaked by the final release. I think they'll do some rebalancing though, especially when they see the huge skew towards melee. It's way too effective right now, and it's not because melee needs to be nerfed, it's because other guns are considerably weaker than Halo 3. In Halo 3, most AR fights still ended in melee, but you could at least break their shield with the AR, and yes, many of these ended in draws. The same thing happens here, it's just that the person who forgoes weapon combat all together is going to win the fight. Rushing in and slapping them twice is better than shooting them in many scenarios.

I totally agree that the DMR should be 4+1 though. I don't think they need to change the bloom either. As it is, it's much harder to use than the BR, which I actually like, but combining the resulting low rate of fire with lower damage is just shitty. If the BR and DMR could fight, the BR would probably win most of the time, and even if they were both 4SK's.

The more I play, the more it clicks, and the more I think the weapons need serious tweaking. My melee kills are nearly double any single weapon and they continue to rise. They should not mess with the pistol though. Well, unless making the assault rifle more powerful would warrant making the pistol greater too. Right now I think the AR needs a boost, the DMR needs to be 3+1, and the NR should have less bloom if it continues to be weaker than the DMR. Everything else is mostly peachy.

The game rules though.. despite being so different. I really miss things like the brute shotty, turrets, and some other things that you see following the evolution of Halo up to Halo 3, but not enough to say that it's any better than what they're giving us here. I have a feeling if I played Halo 3 right now, I'd miss sprinting, covy slayer, the new pistol, and the new weapons much more!

I've seen some people be borderline abusive with armor lock.. but I haven't quite gotten that skill set down yet myself.

And where is that damned grenade launcher on powerhouse? I've used it but only after killing the dude who had it before me. It seems not many people know it's even there so far, since I've only been killed with it four times.

Why are people even bothering with they AR? This game should be all about the Pistol, the pistol is a load out weapon and takes down people quicker than the AR just like in Halo CE. I'm glad they nerfed the AR/beatdown thing from Halo 3, there were far too many encounters that ended like that in TS games.

I'll need to have a play with the DMR to see if it really needs to be powered up. From what i can tell, the "All Purpose" weapons have been removed completely and each weapon is now a "Situation Weapon", just need to find the right times to use them.

Why would you want the default weapon to be total garbage? Yes the pistol is better, but then what is the point of starting with an AR? The fact is that bungie wants us to use it, and if they want us to use it, than they need to do something about it. Right now, sprint + melee + melee is a better CQC weapon than mostly anything in the game (shotgun, sword and hammer excluded). The DMR is okay but it's considerably slower to get a kill with it than the BR. It's basically a long range, slower version of the pistol. 3+1 on the DMR would be so much better, and it's well within reason compared to Halo 3. It will still be a slower weapon than the BR.

If you thought AR+melee was bad, well, prepare to be bum rushed with melee + melee in the Halo Reach beta once today's new players figure out how effective it is.

When you can carry only two weapons, there can't be super specific scenarios for each tool either. Having a pistol means you already have one practical all purpose tool anyway though. It's not as effective at range as something like the DMR (or NR, or needler, etc), but it's still pretty good. And when you consider that the Plasma Repeater is the Covy equivalent of an AR, should we throw that out too?

I've always used the AR as support weapon in times when my primary gun is out of ammo and its quicker to switch weapon than reload. The AR is always the first weapon that i get rid of as soon as i see any new weapon. However, I agree that the AR needs to be powered up because from what i can tell, the AR does seem like Halo 2 SMG, completely useless in pretty much all situations.

Pretty much. Acert seems to have been right about bursting your shots though, but it doesn't help much. The gun does have some bloom, and well, it's interesting how most of the weapons do in this game. It makes it feel distinctly different than other Halo games. I still have a surprising amount of AR kills, but I think it's mostly from when I started out, and before I really started to get the hang of how things have changed. My DMR kills aren't growing all that quickly, since I mostly just rely on the pistol anyway. Right now melee is in first place with 236 kills, and the pistol is a distant second with 117. Rushing people with melee is maybe just a little to effective.
