anyway, nice to see it getting good scores. I've seen the TV ad at least 5 times a day. Quite shocked they're actually trying to push it, thought they would give it the BD treatment. Then again they don't have anything big coming out for the time being I don't think, well until Too Human if that May release is to be believed.
just call me Uncle Ruckus

Anyway, everything good about it is understood, so I won't go into what I like for a moment here, I wanna issue a complaint actually, directed at the "sad" bits of it. They're sad, plenty sad, bordering on tears more often than not... but this is the thing - they're sad, then they go on for like 10 minutes beyond the point of "sadness impact" for me, actually drowning out what was sad with ultra sentimentality.
I dunno why they can't cut some things short and just let them be as sad as the situation they portray, they always see the need to go on and on and on and add layers of crying and violins and everyone's face going :(
It's so frustrating because while they could easily make me cry, this is just the thing that keeps me from it. The first Dream actually had me with tears in my eyes because they realise when they've done what they need. Sadly, that's not the case with the ingame direction.
Case in point, spoiler for disc 1:
When Kaim realises Lirum is his daughter, the flashback is really powerful, and you know she's going to die. This is sad, this had me set up for a SHORYUKEN of sadness in the face. Beyond this point follows a long scene of sobbing and "saw you one last time!" and kids going "MUUUM!", shaking her. It cuts back and forth to Seth and Jansen twisting and turning with sad faces, and back to Kaim with an elaborate dialogue amounting to fluff fluff fluff. At this point, the SHORYUKEN of sadness had slowed down so much I could easily just move out of the way and watch as it flew past in slow motion.
Funeral ensues, collecting flowers was dull I thought, but lighting the torches was pretty effective hearing people go "you're doing good" about Mack. Then we get a scene that starts off with "I thought you'd cry more", this is sad, SHORYUKEN of sadness is readied. Scene spirals down into fluffy talk of "I'm gonna be strong!" and sobbing. wwwoooOOoooosh, shoryuken misses.
Mack darts into the forest with the miraculously revived flowers for mum to see. Fighting, fighting, Mack has weird forest flu, fight fight, there done. LO! Lirum responds to the children by making the flower root there and covers the place in full bloom. The realisation that she heard them is moving, SHOOOOOO....and goes on and on and on... RRRRYYYYYYUUUUUuuuu... and on.. and on... and "It's a miracle" *Kaim does elaborate "taking in the magic" pose.. children jump around... Kkkkkkk....Kkkkkkeeeeeeeeeeen. I'm safe. Ryu and Ken and Akuma all fly past and into the ocean. And drown.
So uh, yeah, while the game often DOES feel gripping, it all too often botches that with really bad direction. :(
I hope there's less hamfistedness later on.
I felts that after the sad scenes they are too quick forgoten and don't meld into the storyline much, it felt a bit like sad scene then 20 mins later everyones cheering and smiling forgetting that someone died not so long ago ... whats that about ?
I do agree that sometimes they go over the top, especially with the scene at end of disc one, it got kind of embarressing to watch because it was so drawn out as did that awful song of Cooke and Mack.
The short stories are written by a pretty famous manga script writer so thats probably why those didn't seem so akward though.
Marumaro for the WIN !!
However, I think there's an even more noticable divide between the dreams and the story you play in that sense, as the dreams feel truly epic yet subtle, and the events that play out - the ones Kaim seems so staggered by - are small potatoes in comparison. There's such a noticable chasm between "Dreams Kaim" and game Kaim that can't really be justified fully with "he's changed for reason X", and that's unfortunate.
The only reason these things bug us (or me anyway) is because it's sometimes *really* good, so I guess what sounds like criticism is just as much a compliment.
Where the story bits are sometimes a bit wonky, the game is consistently a good time anyway, so it doesn't ultimately matter a lot.
Not to Simon's complaint. to each their own I guess Simon, I didnt feel like you did nor like jolli did .... read on below, it's all stuff on disc one
I actually thought having cooke go around the village and sort of look for flowers was truly EMOTIONAL especially the way that little Cooke runs around ... that was even sadder then the death scene itself! same thing goes for Mack and the torch lighting scene. The kaim Bit was TOTALLY unecessary given the nature of his character .... I would have felt better if they let Cooke gather the wood too or have mack do it instead.

Bring on LOST ODYSSEY & CRY ON!
To be honest I agree about the Cooke and Mack bits being effective, my beef is mainly with the way the cutscenes always seem to go on when they've made their point - in a great way even - a long time ago.
Coming from you, it's understandable since you're still in your very first JRPGs anyway ... believe me you will get used to it .... I know I did :D

Also, when I was at Gamestop one of the guys was trying to sway this guy who was on the fence about the game. I'm guessing the guy was retarded or something, since he asked if it played like FFXII and the Gamestop guy said yeah, exactly like it. Then he was like cool I like FFXII's gameplay, and purchased it. I just started laughing
@Cutscenes
At least they don't rival Xenosaga's. Be Happy for that!
