Fairly far in, and boy oh boy is it intense. This game is the real deal, alright :D
It's so much more impressive a game than I thought it would be, and this is considering the fact that I was already pretty excited for this thing.
I'm extremely surprised at how well the story is being handled. As far as exceeding my expectations for this kind of game goes, Conviction passes with flying colors. Really excited about this new direction for Splinter Cell. I'm not even finished yet and I'm already thinking about the possibilities for the next game. The levels are reall well designed. They are pretty much designed for just about every possible style of play that you can think of.
I love the sandbox stealth feel to the game.
I'm also loving the game's graphics. It may not be this juggernaut, but it has its moments, and I can't get over how amazing the shadow are. I also love the depth that many things in the environment appear to have to them.

I've been using things like remote mines, sticky cams and flash bangs almost slim to none. You can say I also haven't done a good enough job using emp grenades.
That's a fairly obvious area for improvement in future playthroughs. Definitely one of the more rewarding games for me this gen. Some of the things I've done thus far have truly been something else.

As you get more accustomed to every area of the gameplay, the effortless moving between them, and the way they spring to mind almost subconsciously, the game gets more and more evocative of japanese action game design to me. The final stretch of the game on realistic had some of the most "natural" use of gameplay mechanics I've experienced in a game of this type.
I mean Gears of War is superb, I've been gushing over Gears 2 enough for people to get the idea that I pretty much.. you know.. yeah. Will take that game up on booty calls whenever, like. But Gears and its ilk have a very laser focused core that you use to tackle external factors. Environments, obstacles and enemy types bring out different shades of the core mechanics - and that's incredibly impressive in its own right of course.
The thing about this game though that I find surprisingly great, is that its core isn't laser focused. It is a more shattered thing akin to something like the older Splinter Cells in many ways, but also reminiscent of Hitman or Commandos in other ways. The difference is in how seamless your transistions are between these elements as opposed to having very clearly defined "gear shifts" between each action.
It's a bit like the way Halo has range, melee, delay/radius/range/grenade, but this has much more abstract concepts than that. Diversion, light/shadow, mark & execute, traversal. It doesn't actually break those apart in the traditional way where it becomes something methodical though, it mashes it together and what comes out is something amazingly dynamic. Which I would've thought is impossible!
And that's why a lot of the more detached concepts have been sacrificed in the jump from the old SC to this one, but the end result is increasingly impressive the more I play it.
Hmm.. God I go on, don't I? :D

In a lot of games, despite there being things to break up the action, it tends to feel as if there truly is only a few clearly defined ways to play the game or, as you said, there is a laser focus on the game's mechanics and how and when you use those mechanics. It's incredibly surprising, probably more surprising than most will ever know since not everyone will pick this one up, how dynamic Conviction really is.
You have to wonder if, in changing the direction of Conviction a good way into its development, Ubisoft really realized that they were making a game as shockingly good as this one. You go into various different playstyles all throughout the game, and as you engage in these different playstyles, you become almost shocked that you didn't attempt this style of play before because there is something that feels so unique or different about this type of appoach than what you've done in other parts of the game, but it manages to feel so natural a component of the overall experience that you just immediately know that this is the sort of thing you could've taken advantage of in so many other parts of the game.
Another thing I'll say about this game is this: I love how the game doesn't set things up in such a way where those videos that Ubisoft put out prior to release showcasing all the various styles of play, those various styles and when to think about taking advantage of them, in a number of cases, can not be immediately obvious. The instances in which just those certain number of enemies are placed in that convenient spot, making the dispatching of them seem like pretty routine stuff, aren't as plenty as the videos would lead you to believe. Sometimes, you'll have that one or two stragglers that are off in those more troublesome positions that causes you to reconsider any of what you might be thinking of trying at that very moment, or there is so much firepower present that you may not necessarily see "clean" ways of doing things. But you'll be surprised and downright amazed at how many different ways there are to pick those formations apart and open up the opportunity for those "clean" situations. It's basically chess, you gotta work for your reward opportunities. They won't always be gift wrapped for you.
I pray Ubisoft sees that this new direction is the way to go in the future. It's too good to scrap, they need to find clever ways of expanding upon it. Either way, I'm not finished yet, so I'm going to press on.
I started playing the SP yesterday from the time I said I got the game straight through to 4AM in the morning on realistic and I'm still not done :D Heh, I knew this wouldn't be a 5 hour game for me, like that IGN review claimed.

I think the way they re-approached it was to use the template present in the old games, but merging those concepts together and making it into a more mobile, immediate and more explosive (pacing/emotionally, not actual pyrotechnics :D) experience.
Realistic has the same effect that Legendary does in the Halo games, it keeps things moving at a more cautious pace. Just overall in terms of land mass though, I really don't think this game is shorter than the old Splinter Cells were, you just move through these locales faster since you don't need to crouch walk everywhere anymore now that running isn't as bordering on bizarrely heavily punished.
Conviction is topping charts here in europe at least, so it's definitely gonna continue. Without spoiling anything, while this story wraps up splendidly they have obvious overarching stuff to draw from for a sequel.
A friend of mine is finishing up his SP run so I'll soon be able to check out the co-op stuff. Deniable Ops is playable for a single player, too, it turns out, so there's plenty of content in there even if you'll never take the game online per se. The co-op is supposedly pretty substantial though, with a proper storyline and a pair of protagonists (Archer and Kestrel) that are Splinter Cells and you have to imagine work for Reed's Third Echelon. Really looking forward to that.
I'm also a bit interested in going back to Double Agent and replaying it, making the choices that this game clearly chose to use as canon. I mean I saved Lambert in DA, but the entire basis for the story setup in Conviction is Lambert's death. So yeah, will prolly get around to doing that. :)

Absolutely loved how everything wrapped up and there is most certainly threads within the story that are certainly important and interesting enough that it can, and absolutely should, continue in a sequel.
All the various conversation and dialogue from the non enemy npcs regarding what was taking place, the actual remembering and carrying over of events that took place earlier in the game by random npc enemies, all of this was very cool to see. This overall level of quality is the absolute last thing I expected from a Splinter Cell game.
The whole presentation of the story, the level designs, the numerous ways to take advantage of the game's mechanics. Voice acting was also top notch.
The game is also definitely a real looker in its own right. It's not ever going to be classified as an Uncharted or some of these other games, but it doesn't need to be. It's doing its own thing and it does it amazingly well. I once had concerns that, due to the attention around Assassin's Creed, that this game may end up not getting the artistic attention it deserves, boy was I ever wrong about that!
Only other game to surprise me like this so far this generation is Batman Arkham Asylum. I sorta get that kind of vibe from the game too. I'm also blown away by how much was changed in the game's story in such a short period of time from the game's story trailer. If you remember that trailer Simon, there are quite a few things that are altered in a big way :D
Maybe its a bit overthetop to go as far as to say changes in the story, but there were most certainly cutscenes that were changed or delivered differently, case in point, Sam's flashback comforting his daughter as she was trying to get to sleep.

Also, I'm downright incredible now on realistic. That third level when i first started where i literally died upwards of 30 something times, I'm not maneuvering around and silently taking out pretty much every enemy. It also just hit me that I wasn't taking advantage of the hand to hand takedown moves properly while in cover. I was always attempting to let go of the cover trigger before doing the hand to hand takedown. This time, however, I'm keeping it held down until they approach my location and really laying into them once they move up on me.
I'm also now using mark and execute far more strategically than ever before. Instead of trying to bank too big on taking out too many at once, I'll settle for that one or two.
I'm also far better utilizing the line of sight against the various enemies. Damn it, this game is good.

I want my games room finished now :(
The cover system works great as well. It also builds some nice tension which is great part of what makes SC great. The locations are very different too, day/night, out/indoor, close quarters, multiple floors, etc. All very detailed. I think the graphics are awesome and fit well with the year we are in, Sam is especially well detailed. Mark and execute is also very rewarding, and the game can be very challenging even in normal difficulty, specially so in the second half of the game, and even more so if you don't want to trigger alerts.
I'm very pleased with this game, not disappointed one bit. Well done Ubi, great job.

The graphics were also very surprising, better than I was expecting. The part of the game where you snuck into that facility where all the scientists were located was truly something else in some parts
Pretty excited to see what they do with a follow up to this one. With the development delays, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the game was as great as it was.
