Last week's Lace Report mentioned Perks - a new function in multiplayer that allows players to customize their online character with their own personal style of combat. This week, we reveal Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's first Perk: LAST STAND.
With Last Stand, you'll get one last ditch effort to continue the fight before you bleed out, or take another lethal hit. When you customize your class with Last Stand, or choose a default class which has it, anytime you're taken down, you'll fall to the ground and instantly pull out your side arm.
While in Last Stand, you'll be firing your side arm from the ground with one hand. Putting up one final last stand against the enemy before you bleed out, or they put one final round into you.
To give you a little glimpse into exactly what it's like to be in Last Stand, we jumped into multiplayer and took a screenshot and some video of the perk in action.
I'm bummed... but still looking good.
When I play this on my PC, I hope they both look about equal.

How is the party system going to function and how many players can be in a party? Also, how will ranking and scoring be affected with players entering and exiting matches at anytime?
Answer:
The party system is set up via its own Party Lobby. Everyone has a Party lobby as soon as you jump into the Multiplayer menus of the game. From there, you can invite friends to join your party (lobby) at any time via the Party Invite option. Once you have your friends in the party, you can search for the game type you want to play and move from game to game as a group.
With matchmaking, when you search for a game, it will only put you in games in progress that are evenly matched with the rank (skill) of your party members and those which are balanced team wise.
You can have up to 8 players in a party; since we want to keep parties together instead of splitting them up. Therefore, if you have a party of 8, it will attempt to search out the most evenly matched game of 8 other players.

Here are some excepts from this months GFW magazine interview w/ IW, dealing directly with this subject.
VZ: Well we're doing good balancing in the game...you start with your base classes--of which begin with perks--and, as you level up, you get new perks. These change the game, but not to the point that a high-level player is clearly more powerful than you. So you look at the list of possible perks, decide to take this or that, and the downside is that you only get one. When you pick that perk, you're eliminating the other 10 that you could've taken, so it balances itself out that way. Same thing with weapons--all the guns and attachments have strengths and weaknesses. If you equip a silencer you're not dealing as much damage, but then you're not showing up on the radar either.
TA: Yeah, perks are divided into three different catagories. So, say, the Radar Jammer is in the same catagory...
VZ: ...as Stopping power, which doubles bullet damage, or Juggernaut, which boosts health. But you can only take one for each build, and that's where the balance is.
VZ: When you join. You're alloted slots with the class you create, and you can change what goes in them from outside the game. Once you join a server, though, you're commited to that class. You can create five different classes and change whatever you want while in the menus or lobby.
TA: Make an offense guy, a flag runner...
VZ: Yeah. We'll have ranked and unranked servers. Unranked games are completely customizable.
