Also, in edge, they show a concept art of the spartans, including noble six, around what appears to be civilians in some kind of town. It appears Reach will actually make sure to show us the kind of world that Reach is and the people and/or creatures that exists on it so, come the end, we can actually have a contrast to the destruction.

It seems that the save feature is in in SP campaign as well. Kind of unnecessary IMO, it's crucial in multiplayer but not so much in SP.
Overall I'm happy with their approach, that they're focusing on expanding simulation and AI aspects of the game as it really what makes Halo so much better than other shooters.

Oooh, Profound, isn't it?
Gameinformer update with actual Reach info. Shocking stuff.
It's with Marty doing some of the music for the VGA trailer. There's a part where he gets rid of the percussion aspect and it sounds pretty awesome. I hope to see that get used in the game at some point :)
Oh, and Bungie is basically calling it a significantly improved Halo 3 engine from what I see in that Edge article.

What's more, everyone pretty much acknowledges that the game is still in development and, as such, nobody is really going nuts. I'll say one thing, though, if there is even the slightest chance of the environment achieving the level of detail already present on the character and weapon models (they don't have to) then... :D

What's that saying again? Fool me four times, shame on.. what?
The amount of detail on the character and weapon models is damn impressive, some of the absolute best I've seen this gen as a matter of fact, and a lot of the environment architecture is pretty much all in line with the cutscene. The cutscene's rock formations weren't at all a far cry from what we are seeing in these screens, not in the least. The real issue is that they are being shown to us from these perspectives that we clearly won't be playing the game in.
Even the same exact fog effect that was present in the trailer is also present in the only first person shot that we basically have of this game. For the noticeable areas where there are flat textures, there are also noticeable areaas where the textures look much better. Then to learn that the build is an older pre-alpha build from pre-thanksgiving and the details given on the significant improvement to their LOD system, the lighting, dynamic weather effects, and the amount of work they've put into the sky and the game's particle system and explosion effects, not to mention the new animation system.
When all is said and done and we probably see the first real major playthrough in July at E3, I think a lot of people are going to be seriously surprised with how good this game looks. If those character models are maintained as they are up until release and the environments get even 75% of the same treatment as the character and weapon models have, this game is going to be a stunner. At least that's what I believe based on what I've seen and read. Perhaps I'm giving them way too much credit, but I guess we'll find out.
Some would probably think that we already have our answer with the screenshots and magazine pictures, but I just have a really good feeling about this. After that cutscene and seeing actual gameplay character models, there's no way the cutscenes go back to just looking like Halo 3. I'm expecting top 3 best looking 360 title when all is said and done on this one. :)

Bungie Update:
Builds are coming in at a blistering pace as the team continues to drive hard and fast towards the ever looming Alpha branch. The process is so break neck at times that it’s hard for us poor dudes over in the community pod to keep track and chronicle the goings on for you in any meaningful way. For example, the build that brought you the latest batch of media assets was already weeks old when we scrubbed it for screenshots. Pre-Thanksgiving, in fact. The nature of the development process is such that stability can often become a concern when the various disciplines are routinely plugging in their new pieces of technical and artistical hotness, so when it came time to show it off to our media friends, we decided to dust off one of the older, notably stable builds. Game tends to show better when it’s in rock solid working order.

It's in swedish but who cares, as long as there are some hi-res screenshots. :)
Some thoughts one the graphics:
I really like the detail on the characters. Just look at the marine. The ground/rock textures are obviously not properly done yet, they look fugly, and there should be more grass (after they praised their new LOD model it better not pop up like in Halo 3). What really bothers me though is the lighting. Especially in the shots with little illumination (the marine shot is a perfect example) it's completely flat and just looks worse than any Halo 3 shot you can come up with. I really hope this gets the amount of polish it deserves (and needs).
Spoiler?
that pic in particular shows just how fantastic this engine can be. It's a shame Bungie is so fond of very empty environments with huge epic background landscapes. It looks great when you are entering a new area, but the close quarters combat starts to feel like fighting in empty rooms.
That pic looks utterly fantastic from lighting to textures to details. If they can use this style more and less of the 2D ground textures this game would look stunning. It's odd how great some pics look and how bare others look. I just wish they would create more "busy" looking levels. Just not fond of how empty so many of the areas are, no mater how stunning the scale or backdrops.

this pic is what I mean, technically great, but just kind of empty looking. AA and details look fantastic though. I have no doubt certain parts of this game are going to look quite stunning.
But it's frankly bizarre they would "beta" test single player footage. What for? They've a million focus groups at MGS for that. The only viable reason would be to test co-op or other MP game modes.
I reckon that's the internal beta for MS employees. I'll still be amazed if the proper public beta has any SP content at all.
Or just some great PR / marketing ala a "beta" that is really a demo/marketing.
I doubt we will see SP in the Beta as well, but there are reasons why it could be done.
As per the fans and graphics--of course true Halo fans don't care about major graphics stuff. Just like they don't really want/care about major changes to gameplay (they fear change more than desire refinement and maturity in something they already like) fans are, well, fans. They already like it, so they don't typically care or demand much.
But at the current rate they should probably just stop talking about graphics and let the gameplay speak for itself before foot enters mouth. Based on the hilarity of their Halo 3 defensiveness (hey, you are getting even MORE than 720p buwahaaha) they might as well not compete with the Cryteks, NDs, and ids of the world. Why pretend even? Better off just talking about Forge or the Theater.

Looks like Halo may at the very least get close to looking as good as it plays.
