because for all we know. it could be a case of assassins creed. cool looking, but kinda shallow when you get down to playing it.
Blowing up hot dog stands does not constitute a substantial tradeoff when you've lost so many gameplay mechanics.

you could argue that the bourne game proved that idea can work...but conviction looks even more stripped down. it was basically the ability to throw guys/objects, put your hood up and shoot hotdog stands...and apparently that is going to equate to ~10 hours of exciting gameplay?!?
i cant help but be a little undecided on the thing. but i cant wait to see it. either to convince me of it's awesomeness, or help me cross the game off my "to get" list.

That said, I invite a new direction. I think five games in the style of the original is quite enough to feel content with what that brought to the table and I like Sam (well, Michael Ironside really) and the tone of SC enough to follow it on new endeavours, but what they do with it has to amount to a compelling game.
I think the criticism geared towards Assassin's Creed caught them off guard, and I mean in that game at least you're hopping around rooftops.
The rumours said it was being delayed and retooled for a 2010 release - something Ubi denied - and that is clearly what's going on. Unless they're just pushing it out the door to be done with it now, I'm excited to see what Conviction looks like now that it's been attended to properly.
As for the old style games, I think "Essentials" was a cool idea but a completely retarded choice of platform. However, I'd really love for them to make prequel games in that vein for the Wii. I'd gladly experience some Navy Seal action with some RE4 style aiming and things like that. For the next gen systems however, the pitch black boxes of "shadow" to hide in and stuff is getting a little bit rediculous and I think in order to stay on top of its game Splinter Cell HAS to evolve.
For me - and I know a lot of people disagree but - Prince of Persia showed that UBI are very much capable of reinventing their IP.. and I sincerely hope the same thing can be said of Conviction.

You will be blown away by Splinter Cell: Conviction
Community Developer at Ubisoft's official forums makes this statement....
Quote:
As you can see, the official website has been updated and events are starting to move with Splinter Cell Conviction. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Mr. Fisher and his supporting cast and in that time the game itself has changed.
Some ideas worked, some didn’t. Some things evolved into entirely new things and some aspects we created were perfect the first time around.
Due to of these changes and evolutions, there is a significant amount of misinformation about what exactly the game is and what it might be. As there will likely be an influx of new users into these forums as things ramp up we want to ensure that both you, the current forum community, and these new members understand exactly what the game is.
For the near future (don't worry, it won't be long) we’ll be closing and removing a lot of gameplay and story speculation, rumors, and misinformation that has developed within the community so we can start with a clean slate and no one will be confused by existing comments, rumours or speculation. When you see the game again your questions will definitely be answered and we believe you will be blown away!

Ubisoft narrowed the release date for Splinter Cell: Conviction to Q3 of this fiscal year (between November 2009 between December 2009) in a conference call this morning.
We also got narrower release windows for games like Assassin's Creed 2 (Q3), Red Steel 2 (Q3) and Ghost Recon 4 (Q4). You can check out the full list.
As part of the company's announcement of financial results for its just-concluded fiscal year, Ubisoft has announced release windows for its full line-up through the end of March 2010.
Quote:
Highlights on the list include Q3 (November 2009 to December2009) releases for Assassin's Creed 2, which Ubi prez Yves Guillemot says will cost 20 percent more than the original and be a much bigger game; the long-delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction; the MotionPlus-only Red Steel 2; Wii-exclusive Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage and Rabbids Go Home.
Quote:
Announced for early 2010 (Q4 ranging from January 2010 to March 2010) are strategy title R.U.S.E., survival game I Am Alive and a new Ghost Recon.
Notably absent from the list is the previously-teased Beyond Good & Evil 2.

In the mean time I'll enjoy Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell
