I went to level 30 with my rogue and had a strong enchanted one handed weapon, had enough strength and powerful weapons, but it pisses me off that the enemies do not react to my damn swings at all!
Even wolfs and regular bandits dont react to them unless its a power attack only or a finisher or the last hit-kill, even when I do the 5-6 hit power combo with dual wield they dont react, and I have died many times because of that crap (by bandits and trolls mostly).
Seriously, the melee combat in this game is pure garbage and is a half assed job that makes melee combat totally useless and unsatistfying way to play this game.
I think it was ManThatYouFear that said the the same thing and went with mage, that way you dont have to deal with the shitty melee combat instead you do magic stuff which atleast is more satistfying, which I agree.
If it wasent for the art and atmosphere of this game I would care for it at all, the music I can get anytime I wanted.
But with my level 5 mage, I love summoning a flaming atronach (spelling?) to help me out, its at novice but still, makes me have 2 companions, Lydia and her.
First thing I did when I was strong enough was to try and join the mages guild, and got a staff along the way.
Bethesda needs to get their damn act together if they plan on making melee combat type of games because games such as Kingdom of Amalur is leaps beyond this game in combat department.
Even Fable is better than this.
I have a question to those that are maybe 40+ level and wield any type of sword/combo, being dual wield, one handed+shield (shield bash doesnt count) or two handed.
Do enemies react to your normal attacks? I am not talking about to the point enemies are weak its a one hit kill.
Chanticleer Hegemony
I have even unlocked perks that allowed me to do like 40% damage WITH a chance of critical damage.
But nope, no reaction from the enemies as I mentioned before.
Bethesda is just plain lazy and incredibly dumb for not actually putting as much effort in their combat mechanics in games as they do with other stuff.
Its like if I played a FPS and all the guns has horrible sound, weapons lacked any punch and was like a paintball when shooting and the hit detection was way off and not even in the game.
For me, in any fantasy game, I look at combat first and foremost before anything else. be it action game or RPG and I was foolish enough to expect anything other than what the videos showed before release.
Bethesda is only great at making fantasy worlds thats about it.
Now this mage, is decent for now, I am not high level with many spells to do much, but I hope it gets better.
Since I use Heavy Armor and my sneaking is low, I normally don't even try my bow, but I've leveled it up enough that dragons/mammoths/giants get high damage from it. Combine that with the Shout of Unrelenting Force, most things go flying, and then get power jabbed to death.
My issue is the unsatistfying part of enemies not reaction to the normal attacks when they are not blocking, and that pisses me off. I keep attacks and I expect the bastards to react so they dont get a chance to do their attacks unless its a sub boss demon or something.
When enemies dont react to my swings then the combat sucks IMO, plain simple.
I dont get it, the game is a RPG and not a action game. Its not like they have to focus on making alot of combos or whatever, only thing they have to focus on is weight behind enemies, SFX, detections and hit reaction simple.
Combat is REAL TIME combat, its not something like Final Fantasy or Dragon Age were its all commands.
I wish the game had a counter attack system and to be able to block with dual wield.
My other issue is level number and health on enemies from afar when I have the crosshair on them, like Borderlands.
I want to know what level the enemies are before I can decide if I can take them on or not, many times I am just going to fight anyone (except mamoths and giants) and then I die within 3-4 hits by them because the enemy was like 10x the stronger than I was.
One reason why I say this is because of the scrolls and spells, some of them says that level "random number" creatures and people will flee for a certain amount of seconds or the zombie spells...how the hell am I suppose to know what level they are when I cant see it on my screen? dumb decision.
Now maybe I am missing an option in the game or something, but anyone with mage specialist that knows can tell me?
I just find the game to be very rough around the edges in general. I put that down to quantity over quality, which has kind always been Bethesdas problem. The games are good, but if they dropped from 250 dungeons to maybe 80 the game would still be huge, but there'd be more time to make the systems tight, each location more unique and there'd be more time to make quests more interesting. I really think they should scale down the quantity and push up the quality.

I'm loving the combat i'm a BattleMage, am i'm badass!!, took a quick trip to Riften last night, some great characters and quest there, i will try to get to the Mage School this weekend can't wait!!, i know that trek will be awesome :)

IMO big world to explore is not selling me the game at all, I am not buying a game so I can take a tour of a world they created.
I want the gameplay to be as tight as possible and responsive as possible, for me that is a much more important on how many plants I can rip, how I many animals I can kill and cook them, how many useless items I can react with like spoons and shit like that.
Thing is, Oblivion came out years ago and now its 2012, there is no excuse for shitty combat anymore, even Fallout 3 had garbage shooting feedback.
I am not buying the "its a RPG" because thats a dumb excuse.
Kingdom of Amalur, Dark/Demons Souls, Fable, Tales of Xilia (or whatever its called), those games have great combat as well as its RPG elements.
You have to fight to level up, and when you do level up and add perks to your combat skills you obviously want to try and find enemies as soon as possible. But whats the point if combat is such a huge crap in this game.
The core thing in this game is to having fun is the combat, and the combat is just as pathethic as it comes IMO.
Nice animations, nice weight to the attacks, nice SFX and hit detection when hitting. But when the enemy doesnt react to your attacks its like you are shadow fighting with no impact whatsoever and that pisses me off the most, and it kills you the most.
While enemies can hit you WITHOUT power attacks and stagger you and make you disoriented and go back, happened many times to me and I was "wtf?".

With mage its all about visual effects doing the damage and not steel to body.
I have tried like 4-5 builds now and still no satistfaction.
Shield and sword, two handed sword, one handed weapons, one handed weapon + magic, dual wielding.
I have played with each until I am to level 20 tops because I feel at level 20 I dont have to deal with no hit reactions.
Only one I can say has atleast the most effect is definitely by far shield and one handed weapon, because of the shield bash.
This is pretty much my last Bethesda game I will play because I cant deal with crappy combat in such a game focused so much on melee (and magic).
I cant wait for Kingdom of Amalur to come in February, seems to be my type of RPG.
