Good for them really.. though personally I can't imagine going back to a modless version of the game. Vanilla COD4 is fine and all when it comes to pubbing.. it just isn't as well suited for league play without mods. It's a bit like playing Halo with pub rules versus playing it with the MLG set.

Now what this says to me, is that IW, will let the COD4 community do some of the legwork for them. Its already been stated that IW is doing its own official COD4 maps for DLC. But what the above statement says is that if you do a map with PC mod tools/editor and it is a well done map, that IW will work on it to be able to put it on 360 & PS3, not just for PC users. So I'd expect official maps from IW in Feb or March... user created maps built on the PC for the COD4 community... brought over to 360 Early Mid Summer.

EDIT: I just played a couple of custom maps.. pretty cool. I just played mp_village and mp_subways--village was the cooler of the two. It sorta reminded me of an older COD level.. a bit more open and fairly large for COD4. That server also had quake/ut sounds, which is great. I've missed hearing "FIRST BLOOD!" and "KILLING SPREE!"
I didn't much care for that mods other alteration though--non-regenerative health. It wasn't so bad once I figured out that corpses dropped health packs, but taking a massive amount of fall damage that can't be replenished sucks.
Overall I'm impressed by how quickly the community is making use of the map tools, and I'm excited by the premise of COD2/CS/BF remakes, in addition to some fine originals of course :)

Sadly, it also means there will be a lot of upset people around if Treyarch don't meet the same bar with COD5.

There are plenty of people who actually believed that COD3 was a better game than COD2 though, so who knows, maybe the same trick will work twice :)

I think it's a a funny situation, I know Activision want to get into this yearly franchise marlarkey and I guess it's not as bad as forcing IW to make a game every year but ultimately, it dilutes the franchise taking this approach. Surely it would be better for Treyarch to develop their own IP/spin off using IW's tech if need be.
Same thing is happening to a lesser extreme with Guitar Hero.

I hope IW will release a addon to CoD4, just like CoD:UO.. The sistuation is the same, CoD4 is bassicly a whole new game aswell, just like CoD was..
About CoD5, since that will not be on PC it will be non-existing for me.. Besides that it's not from IW, the only true makers of CoD.. And we don't need a new CoD every year.. Like I said, I'd much rather see a good addon to CoD4 to extend it's life, and make the game a big longlasting succes with the hardcore competitive community aswell.. Then in 2 years time orso IW can release a even better CoD6..
