No, the only ones that survive Reach are the ones the Chief rescues which are the 3/4 I mentioned before from the end of First Strike.

Thinking about it (not read it for ages though)..
I the fall of Reach book, I'm sure I remeber it saying that Spartans fight in 4 man/girl squads. Can any one confirm this? (no idea where my copy is)
If true then the 3 he saved are enough.

What's the polygon count on the characters and environments in comparison to Halo 2?

Not as high as it looks. A lot of detail is achieved using a combination of lighting, textures, normals and bump-maps. We're saving our polygon budget for other things…



Uh oh for any GOTY contendors:

"The sand, dust, smoke and other effects are all from the game engine. They will be used in the game. The landscape you saw is real geometry - the mountains and city in the distance are not a skybox - they are actual geometry that you can go to. Our cut scenes and our gameplay will be very comparable. Also, CJ Cowan, our director of cinematics, says that the texture "pop" seen in Halo 2's cinematics has already gone bye-bye for Halo 3."

"The geometry is basically the real geometry you're flying, walking or running to, although LOD (Level Of Detail) saves the programmers (in this case us) RAM and processing horsepower by simplifying what's actually being drawn at distance. On what they showed to the press:

"We flew them around the environment, flew out over the Forerunner structure, did a close-up of the Chief to show the realtime reflection of the visor (you could see the ammo counter running down in his faceplate) and showed off the unified lighting model we're using - particularly how other surfaces, such as sand, reflect light back up onto his armor. Frame rate was silky smooth, but to be fair, that was basically an empty environment with the Chief in it. However, we're obviously trying to make our finished game silky smooth too. I don't know how they reacted, but one journalist asked me if I had gotten any death threats."

Who wont buy a 360 when this game comes out? Seriously it will look gorgeous and they aren't even using that much geometry.... haha amazing ;)

Apparently it isn't that much of an issue if they can pull off what they are saying they can ;)

From what I'm seeing jolli alot of developers are doing it. I mean saints row is doing it.... too human (probably not best example right now :P) is doing it... crackdown is doing it... halo.... carmack and the guys working on return to castle wolfenstein are doing it.... Something just tells me its either the developers are just really confident they can pull it off or its one of the 360's strengths.

I'm sure even GTA will do it.

LOL optimus i wasn't saying it was a problem, i was replying to RAZurrection.

Also i think that the majority of people using the multiplayer maps or live customers will be premium and HDD customers anyways so they could add the feature to allow for HDD caching.

Just because the HDD isn't standard doesn't mean no cacheing is going on. Devs are encouraged to use it if it's there, part of the HD is reserved for it after all. Having 512MB of RAM helps a lot.

Streaming off the disc is excellent, games like Saint's Row just wouldn't be feasible otherwise. The disc speed isn't just a factor here, Microsoft have a lot of tools that optimise the data layout of the disc to put data in the right places hence getting as near to the transfer rate as possible.

Halo 3 is nowhere near this stage though so the demo would have been running off the dev HD

Though being fair, in Halo 2 there's no cacheing in multiplayer maps (no mid level loads as in the single player) , it's all loaded during the matchmaking part

That's interesting Deftangel about the HDD, I suppose it's easier for devs to make a game to take advantage of the HDD and make adjustments for non-HDD 360's than vice versa. I s that the case?

I suppose we can hope that because the PS3 now has a HDD a lot more multiplatform games would take advantage

You wouldnt need other spartans to be alive for 4 player co-op. You already get 2 player co-op and there is only one spartan.......or is there........
